Page Six High Life December 14, 1956 Demetriou Is Winner In Oralorical ContesI Prances Demetriou, sophomore, who was recently declared first place winner in the local. “I Speak for Democracy” contest, was notified December 9 that she is first place winner in the state contest. The general theme of the spefeches was “Democracy and What It Means To Me.” Frances came to the United States from Greece just seven years a^o. Con sequently she spoke of democra cy in regard ' to Greece and America. Seniors Top List of Honor Roll Students She told of the Second World War and the destruction she knew in Greece. The village in which she lived was destroyed, and her family fled to the moun tains. She then said that coining to the United States taught her what democracy really is. Here she was welcomed and has come to -know a new happiness. This speech lasted approximately five minutes. Prances entered this contest as a result of the GHS speech class. For the local award she competed with 23 other people and won a $50 savings bond. Her prize as state winner is an all-expense paid trip to Wash ington, D. C. in February. —o Carolina To Feature New Comedy-Drama By Jane Thompson “The Great American Pastime,” a chuckling comedy-drama, starts Sunday at the CAROLINA THE ATRE. The story is built around a typical American husband and father, whO' attempts to become a hero to his son by managing a Little League baseball team. As 9 result, he becomes involved in hilarious complications. Tom Ewell and Anne Francis play the young married couple whose domestic tranquility runs into a snag when hubby becomes the manager of a Little League baseball team. Ann Miller plays a devoted fan of both baseball and Tom. There is always a guarantee of funny doings ahead when Tom Ewell's name appe^s at the head of a cast. He became a success in his co-starring role with Marilyn Monroe in “The Seven Year Itch.” Starting Thursday for seven days, the CAROLINA THEATRE will present Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis in their latest and best “Hollywood or Bust” in Tech nicolor.—^Ad. A total of 129 seniors went home the second six weeks with regular honor roll on their report cards with room 8 having the most with 12 students.
