March 22, 1957 High Life Page Three Symphonettes Capture First Prize In Annual Torchlight Talent Show First place winner in the an nual Tordilight Talent Show Tues day morning, March 12, in the auditorium was the newly orga nized GHS Symphonettes, a 16- member orchestral group, which played “anoke Gets In Your Eyes” and “The Way You Look Tonight.” Singing “The Banana Boat Song,” Jack Jessup, Charlie Quinn, Jimmy Powell, and Tucker Mason, composing the Queen’s Men, se cured second place, and honorable mention was received by the Two- Plus-Two drum act (minus one with the measles) consisting of Rick Aderhold, treasurer of Torchlight, served as master of ceremonies for the program, and Mary Lou Hutton, senior, gave the devotional. Bussell on Accordion Other contestants were Rufus Russell, who played a medley df folk songs on the accordian, and Linda Sanders, giving a mono logue of “Stella at the Picture Show.” The Teen-Rockers jazzed up the show with a number by Jerry Robertson on the bass, Wally Mid- D. E/s Annual Convention Takes Place March 29> 30 Talented GHS students and teachers were 'snapped’ as they displayed their abilities in assembly last Tuesday. In the upper right picture Miss Eula Tuttle, fur and all, accompanies those “Monotonous Monotones.” The chorus line, left to right include Robert Fredrickson, Frank Bandanella, Julian Smith. Lody Glenn, Pat Earey, and Claude Manzi. This group incidently was voted an honorary membership in “Flashlight.” The lower photo pictures the Symphonettes, the winning act. They are back row left to right, Harry Smith, Dave Miller, Rufus Bussell, Susan Deviney, Nan Hedrick, and Bob Wilkerson. On the first row are Jerry Robertson, Janet Snid^, Rhonda Dandliker, Julia Adams, Jan Phillips, Linda Harrison, and Paul Tobin. Paula Sain, Bob Miller, and Linda Cash well are not pictured. Cooper Null at the drums, Dennis Maynard at the tenor sax, and Jerry Robertson at the bass fid dle. McNairy, Hipps, Hitchcock Judge Judged by Miss Dorothy Mc Nairy, principal of General Greene School and past Senior High teacher. Reverend R. Harold Hipps, assistant pastor of West Market Street Methodist Church: and Fred Hitchcock, chairman of the PTSA finance committee, the first and second place winners received! priz^ of $10 and $5 re spectively. Members of the Sym phonettes, including Rufus Rus sell, Ronda Dandliker, Harry Smith, Bob Miller, Paul Tobin, David E. Miller, Linda Harrison, Julia Adams, Janet Snider, Susan DeVeny, Nan Hedrick, Jan Phil lips, Linda CashT^ell, Jerry Robert son, Paula Sain, and Bob Wil kinson, spent the sum on music. Sportswear Glady's Shoppe BANNER BUILDING kiff, the electric guitar, and Nor man Carroll, the drums. A piano solo of a medley of popular songs was given by Paula Sain. Deanna Daktor and I^ggy Weant presented a hill-billy act to “Sure Fire Kisses”; Julia Adams, accompanied by Peggy Sink, per formed a violin solo of “F^t Movement of Vivaldi’s Concerto in A Minor”; and Becky Cham bers sang “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” accompanied on the piano by Jeannie Turner. Two Bonus Acts Two bonus acts not in the judg ing were featured previous to the announcement of the judges’ de cision. Lynn Rankin, senior mem ber of Torchlight, played “Bum ble Boogie” on the piano, and the “Monotonous Monotones,” a fac ulty ensemble, presented a novel ty singing act. Miss Eula Tuttle, head of the vocal department, accompanied singers Robert Fred rickson, Julian Smith, Lody Glenn, Claude Manzi, Pat Earey, and Frank Bondanella. March 29-30, at Woman’s Col lege, the 13th annual State Con vention of the Distributive Edu cation Clubs of North Carolina will take place. Hosts at the convention will be from Bessemer, with Greensboro having charge of the social hour to take place in the Virginia Dare Room in the Alumnae Building, in which all business meetings will also take place. Pleasant Gar dens has charge of the registra tion, which begins at 10 a. m. Saturday morning the election results will be announced. Also there is to be the constitution committee report, the election of state officers, and installation of officers. The official delegates from Greensboro will be Don Hicks, senior, Der Hong Hanson and Ruth Padgett, juniors, and Bobby Jones and Mary Ann Ma^therly, seniors. Many D.E. students from Senior High will attend the convention. according to Mrs. Margaret G. Hadden, D.E. coordinator. Sophomores Dominate Senior's Special List Continued From Page One Bob Cunningham are the special studients from room 1. Prom H.E. 200, room 24, and M200 come Mar tha Deal, Jimmy Pinison, and Margaret Humphrey, respectively. Representing 201B are Martha Jordan, Rinda King, and Wanda Kinney, while from room 21 come Edith Lund and Carolyn Lyday. Carol Overstreet, room 7; David Patrick, 200; and Clark Raynor and Sheila Sapero, 203B, also made special. Sandra Sharpe comes from 302, and Ruth Spaulding, from 304. Other sophomores to make spec ial are John Stevenson and Genie Sykes, room 15; Toni Thompson, room 12; Steve Vaughn and Ann Weinstein, room 27; and Nancy Wilkins and Judy Williams, H.E. 100.
