In the picture beloic are Fenny
Taliaferro and Betsy Glynn, two
outstanding members of the
GreenslH^o swimming team, shown
with their many metals and tro
phies. Betsy is on the left, and
Penny is on the right. The awards
were won in junior Olympic, east
ern seaboard, state, and south^n
championships. Both mermaids
have been collecting medals for
approximately three or four years.
To the left are some of the
speedball techinques illustrated.
Speedball Provides Healthful Exercises;
Requires Talent, Skills, Perseverance
‘Come on gang, let’s speed that
all!” Yes, that’s how the game
f speedball was named about 36
ears ago. It was invented in the
ood or U. S. just as basketball
ind baseball were. The most recent
if the three, it was begun by El-
ler D. Mitchell at the Univer-
ity of Michigan.
The name is quite appropriate,
since speedy handwork, footwork,
and headwork are essential for
excelling in the game.
Speedball Is Combination
Speelball is a combination of
soccer and basketball. Wlien on
the ground, the ball is played with
the body and feet as in soccer;
when it is in the air it’s played
as basketball.
The result of this is a fast-mov
ing game that makes for lots of
scoring oppcri’tunity and a chance
to lose a few pounds.
From the university where it
originated, speedball' has spread
all over the United States. It has
been adopted for high school,
junior high and college play. Be
cause of the vigorous, healthful
exercise it provides, the army and
navy training camps used it as
a sport for conditioning during
World War 1.
Girls Play
It was not until thi’ee years aft
er the sport was invented that
girls began to play it. Many of the
rules and scoring methods of the
girls’ game differs from the boys.
Kickin gand aPssing
As already mentioned, kicking
and passing make up the game.
The object is to advance the ball
up the field and score. Points may
be made by a fi^d goal, touch
down, di’op kick, and the penalty
kick. Sometimes a player is al
lowed just to kick the ball; and
at other times to pass it. One
of the main strategies that falls
in the “headworic” category is to
get a ground ball in the air and
an aerial ball on the ground when

Mr, Funk to his secretary, “take a definition.”
“Taste: sensations ... excited ... by the...

“And add this,” put in Mr. Wagnalls. “Taste:

“That,” said Mr. Funk, “wraps it up. Mr.
Wagnalls, will you join me in a Coca-Cola?”
“So good in taste...”
“And ... in such good taste!”

Positions on the girls’ team con
sist of the forward line, made
up of a center; right and left in
ner; and right and left wing;
halfbacks, fullbacks; and a goal
keeper.
Play is started by a kickoff.
A toss of a coin determines which
team is to go first. The ball,
which is a standard soccer ball,
is kicked by the center from a
point on the center of halfway
line. The members of the defen
sive team are required to stay
behind the restraining line and
those of the kicking team may not
cross the middle line until the
ball is kicked.
Four Quarters
The game is divided into four
quai’ters, each one being 8 min
utes in length, with a two min
ute break in quarters. A ten min
ute intermission is allowed be
tween halves.

Cheer Leader
Penny is a sophomore and can
be seen in action as a cheerlead
er this yeai-. She is one of two
sophs to have won a place among
this select group, but during the
spring and summer months she
spends as much time in the water
as she does out. Last summer,
after a sparkling performance in
the big local meet, she was named
Athlete of the Week by the Daily
News. 'The Greensboro girls won
that local meet by half a point
after two days of thiilling races
against some of the finest swim
mers in the country; but Penny
was the only local girl to win a
first place. _
Betsy Is Junior %
Betsy is a junior this year. She's
the sprint star of the team in
freestyle and cuts through the
water as though she has a little
motor propelling her along. She
won the National Junior Freestyle
100 meter and is the anchor
s\^’1mmer on both the freestyle
and medley relay teams. Her tre
mendous mpdal board, covered
with medals (most of them gold
for first place wins), shows the
gi'eat number of state, Junior
Olympic and Eastern Seaboard
events she has entered with great
succe^.
Penny’s Trophies
Penny’s medal board is filled,
too. She won a first in the Na
tional Junior Olympics (in back-
stroke) when she was only 12
years old—her second year of
swimming on the team.
