In First Conference Bout
The WhirUes defeated the Pirates from Greensboro Page 62-47 January 8. Before meeting
the Whirlie cagers, the Pirates had a 7-0 record in what seemed to be one of the most as-
Wh*WoS
The Whirlies with a 19 game winning streak at stake lost to
Lynchburg 39-23. It was an unusually low scoring game with
the Whirls only hitting 3 for 17 shots from the floor at the half.
There are several reasons for the Blue and White’s sad defeat.
First, the players themselves weren’t pulling off their usually
accurate plays as they did before Grimsley fans. Second, and
just as important, there were no Grimsley fans. The Whirlies
played on foriegn court with no support. The fact that the
game was played over the holidays was aU the more reason
that Whirlie fans should have been there. The rest of the
games this season at the most are an hour’s drive away. No
excuses offered or excepted—the Whirlies will not play on
foreign courts with no support from Whirlie fans again.
Several Whirlie football players have accepted football schol
arships for the next four years. They are Frankie Leonard,
VPI, and Larry Dempsey, Duke .Congratulations on this fine
continuance of Whirlie tradition.
February 14 is the tentative date for the North Carolina
Regional SCCA Gymkhana.
Dave Grimes ’effort to upgrade the expressions Warring
from the Whirlie stands paid off Friday night. The favorable
comments from everywhere were almost as rewarding as the
game. ^'i 'i'
Five tall bop from Grimsley met five Pirates on a very
strange battlefield. After quite a fast paced skirmish, the finW
results showed 62 points to the Red Bandits from cross-town,
47.
The Whirlies now have a 6-1 record and stand first in con
ference tied with the Bulldogs from Burlington.
Since we are the originals, shouldn’t we feel honored?

The Whirlies now stand 7-1 in
overall play and 3-0 in conference
competition. Larry Dempsey, who
scored 30 points against the Pi
rates, had scored more points at
the half than the entire Page
team.
The second half showed a def
inite upheaval in the Page per
formance. The Whirlies attempt
ed to move the ball too fast and.
as a result, had the ball stolen
too much.
The Whirlie guards, McMakin
and McNairy, as always, got the
ball to the tall men when it was
most crucial.
Probably one ot the largest
crowds ever to pack the Senior
High Gym witnessed this struggle.
In other words, fans were literal
ly hanging from the rafters. With
a crowd, upwards towards 4,000,
three fourths of them Blue and
White fans, cheering and scream
ing them on, the Whirlies just
couldn’t have lost. They didn’t
and also made it quite an un
comfortable evening for their vis
itors.
The Blue and White Whirlies
from Grimsley stomped Salis
bury 68-56 January 5 in their
first conference game of the seas
on. The victory not only gave the
Whirlies a 5-1 record so far this
season but also provided plenty
of action for the Whirlie reserves.
Center Larry Dempsey and for
ward Bob Albright paced the win
for Grimsley. Dempsey scored 27
points and Albright 15. Skipper
Gardner, John McNairy and Ben
McMakin did their part in keep
ing the yellow jacket shooting
far below their usual and steal
ing the ball.
During the second half the
Whirlie regulars left the court
and Wilson, Van Hecke, Carlton,
Howard, Weaver, Markham, Peer,
Blackwood, Underhill and Clark
got a chance to show what they
could do.
Salisbury had a 6-0 record be
fore meeting the Whirlies and
was a central 4-A team to watch.
