2 News February 27,2013 Will Hillary Clinton run for Presidency in 2016, or will health issues discourage her? BY ALLIYAH SANDERS Reporter According to Phillippe Reines, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's Senior State Department aide, Clinton was hospitalized after suffering a blood clot following an acci dent in January. "In the course of a follow-up exam today. Secretary Clinton's doctors discovered a blood clot had formed, stemming from the concussion she sustained several weeks ago," Reines said in a statement on December 30, 2012, for the Washington Post. He further explained that "she was being treated with anti coagulants" while under the care of New York Presbyterian Hospital so that doctors could monitor the medication over a 48-hour period. She fell ill with a stomach bug that led to her fainting and suffering a concussion. Clinton was off work since the return from her last foreign trip on De cember 7 although her staff confirmed that she continued working from home. Presently, she has returned to work. Clinton's lengthy absence from public life sparked claims from some of her fiercer that she was trying to avoid testi fying on December 20 to U.S. lawmakers before lawmakers investigating a deadly assault in which the US Ambassador and three other American offi cials were killed in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi on September 11. However, the State Department claimed Clinton had contracted a bad stomach virus during her five- day stay in Europe. She also had to cancel a planned trip to North Africa and Abu Dhabi due to the illness. As First Lady in the White House with her husband, then- President Bill Clinton, she suf fered a blood clot in her leg, which she described as "the most significant health scare I've ever had" in 1998. There was no clarification regarding which part of her body the clot had appeared, nor if it were life-threatening. "That was scary because you have to treat it immediately— you don't want to take the risk that it will break loose and travel to your brain, or your heart or your lungs," she told the "New York Daily News" in October of 2007. In her recent case of illness, Clinton's doctors stated that she became severely dehydrated due to the effects of the stomach bug and fainted, suffering the concussion. They recommended she rest at home through mid- January and avoid the high-in- tensity travel schedule to which she had become accustomed as Secretary of State. Clinton flew almost a mil lion miles since taking office four years ago. She visited 112 countries and spent about 400 days on planes. Some Republicans alleged Clinton faked the illness, a charge her office vigorously denied, while vowing that she would testify in January when capable. Clinton, who will step down from her post in early 2013, also stayed away from the White House. President Barack Obama nominated her replace ment, veteran Senator John Kerry. She issued a statement paying tribute to her successor. Once Clinton finally did tes tify regarding the Libyan trag edy, Clinton insisted on Wednesday, January 23, that the department is moving swiftly and aggressively to strengthen security at U.S. installations missions worldwide after the deadly Sept. 11 raid on the consulate in Libya. Clinton once again took full responsibility for the department's missteps leading up to the assault at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Ameri cans. She said the Obama adpalatis clearly chemistry be tween the two," says The Mod erate Voice's Joe Gandelman. The "flawlessly effortless" interaction between Clinton and Obama clearly demon strated a "fierce bond" be tween the two that "cameras cannot lie about," says Taylor Marsh in regard to the televi sion interview in an article posted on January 28 on her "View from a Recovering Par tisan" website.. Clinton is wearing glasses for the first time, instead of contact lenses, because of the "lingering effects from the concussion that are decreasing and will disap pear," she told Kroft when he asked about her recent head in jury and cranial blood clot. Clinton claimed that there is no history of blood clots in her family, yet the subject remains close to her heart. "I have a lot of sympathy now when I pick up the paper and read about an athlete or one of our sol diers whose had traumatic brain injury," said Clinton. Second Inauguration sets trend for next four years in Oval Office By LUKE SUMERFORD Layot Design Editor President Barack Obama took the presiden tial oath of office on Mon day January 21st, 2013. This was another land mark for the first African American president. Although the ceremony and celebration was smaller than in 2009, hundreds of thousands still came out in the bit ter cold to watch the president and vice presi dent take their oaths. Even though President Obama and Vice Presi dent Biden had already taken the oath of office the day before, as required by the constitution, they held the public oath on Martin Luther King Day. After all the dignitaries filed into the presidential box in front of the capital building, the president walked out and the cel ebration began. Senator Chuck Schumer started the inaugurations off with the call to order, ba sically announcing that's what everyone was gath ered for. Next the invoca tion was given by Myrlie Evers-Williams, who was married to famous civil rights activist Medgar Evers. This seemed very fitting, con sidering it was the day honoring our nation's greatest civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr. After the invoca tion Joe Biden took his public oath of office ad ministered by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Next came a performance from the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir though everyone was just waiting for the president turns to come. After the choir sang a beautiful version of "Battle Hymn of the Re public" it was finally the Presidents big moment. Chief Justice John Roberts delivered the oath to now second term President Barack Obama. After the oath. President Obama delivered the final inau guration speech of his life. In this important speech Pres. Obama outlined what the next four years will be about, the main theme being equality and gun control. He says "We, the people, still believe that our obligations as Americans are not just to ourselves, but to all posterity." This is an ob vious remark on his be lief in wealthier paying there fair share in taxes, but also his belief that women should be allowed to serve on the front lines in the military which became a hot topic towards the end of January. "But we have always understood that when times change, so must we; that fidelity to our founding principles re quires new responses to new challenges; that preserving our indi vidual freedoms ulti mately requires collec tive action," said the President. This is a reference to the belief that gay marriage should be legalized, which he came out in support of last May. "Our journey is not complete until all our children, from the streets of Detroit to the hills of Appalachia to the quiet f. ' '■si?' President Barack Obama takes the oath of office while swearing on the bibles of both the Lincoln family and the Martin Luther King, Jr. family. Following the ceremony, he signed both bibles as keepsakes for the two families. Such was the beginning of a day filled with celebration for the President and his family. Internet Photo lanes of Newtown, know that they are cared for, and cherished, and al ways safe from harm." This is a clear statement from the president in support of gun control. Statements like these caused much of contro versy from the right side of the political spec trum. Conservative pundits like Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh criticized the President for everything from making the speech too political to being an outright socialist. Overall, the speech was seen as a step in the right direction for the country. He outlined moderate ideas to not only help the country develop, but also to keep the country safe. Time will only tell whether these ideas get put into action.
