Page 0 UNCF Longevity Record by Dr. Alma Adams (Excerpted from Dec. 10, 1987 speech delivered in Providence, R.l.) The United Negro College Fund has indeed been an enabling force toward helping 43 predominately Black Col leges and Universities and thus over 45 thousand Black students attain and main tain that firm grip needed for growth, productivity and survival. UNCF has an impressive record, one of longevity, one which has manifested itself through years of genuine concern and a positive com mitment to build stronger Educational In stitutions which help make us a better and stronger nation. Let's look for a moment at the track record of accountability and a ac complishment of Black schools. How ac countable have Black colleges been to Black students; and what has been the impacton this society and the Black culture? One of the best parallels that I often make about commitment and scrifice can be best described in the story about the chicken and the pig. The chicken who supplied the eggs for the meal simp ly mad a contribution; but the pig who provided the bacon and thus gave his life, made a commitment. So you see commitment exceeds that of providing minimum substance and it goes far beyond that which is required. It in volves sacrifice. According to the July 87 issue of Crisis Magazine, "the contributions made to society by Black colleges as a whole, based on their size and numbers, far out distance what anyone would consider reasonable." Consider that Morehouse College Alumni constitutes 5% of the Black physicians and dentists in the U.S. and 30% of Black attorneys in the coun try, and Xavier University's College of Pharmacy trains 14% of all Black phar macists, more than any other pharmacy and college in the nation; consider that in Greensboro, North Carolina, Bennett College produced more than half of the Black female dentists practicing in North Carolina. Consider if you will that the First Black astronaut to travel in Space, the late Ron McNair, and the first Black Presidental front-runner, Jesse Jackson were products of another historically Continued on page 25 Merry Christmas & Happy New Year From Vernon Robinson 21st Century Political Action Committee r ^osVJZVdfnes R & R FUEL OIL SERVICE “Your Friendly OH Company" Fuel Oil - Kerosene ■ Burner Service Phone (919) 784^9 or (919) 788-9640 $ EARN MONEY $ The Phoenix is activeiy searching for Account Ex ecutives to seii advertisement space. The prophets of old announc ed it. But nobody ex pected hope to be fulfill ed from a manger. In that manger, in the midst of the world's violence. hatred and greed, the rule of love and justice is af firmed. The worship of the shepherds, the adoration of the wise men and shelter for the holy family in Africa's Egypt, marks loves response to him who "came to serve and not be served." Let us celebrate Christmas this year by ex pressing our responsibili ty to the least of these. May we specifically render service to the poor and hopeless children of this world. May we see our society from a child's perspective, they are the greatest.
