Pharr After posting a 7-3 mark overall and 4-1 record in the MEAC, the Hornets are pre pared to challenge the Howard Bison for the crown in 1988. Coach William Collick, who has been associ ated with Hornets foot ball since 1981 returns seven offensive and six defensive starters from 2 years ago. It would be an understatement to say that the Hornets are enthusiastic about the upcoming cam paign. They are young enough to avoid seri ous injury (10 seniors on roster) and experi enced enough to win close games. Always a strong rushing team, the Hor nets must balance their attack with the pass in order to seriously challenge Howard Uni versity. A battle is brewing (pr the quarterback slot in the Hornets camps with senior Mike Walker (6- 2, 190) and junior Dar ren Felton (6-0, 200). Both operate the Dele- ware State wing-t well, but neither has shown the passing efficiency the Hornets will need in '88. Senior halfback Reggie Barnes (5-11, 210) burned the opposition for over 600 yards and nine TD's a year ago; Junior John Barber and sophomore Robert Bethea will fill the void left by All-MEAC Ter rance Hoover. Junior Tim Egerton (5- 11,165) will share time ^ at wide receiver with 6- 4, 215 pounds Mike Riddick. Egerton nabbed 21 passes for 384 yards, while Rid dick hauled in eight MEAC's Sleeper passes for 152 yards a year ago. Senior tight and Mike Delon (6-4, 220), who caught nine passes for 153 yards last season, returns to the Hornets stable. The . offensive line with 6-3, 270 pound guard Justin Proctor and 6-2, 29D pound tackle Charles Loney will lead the hornets surge along with Lee Johnson. The center . position is presently a "dead heat" between 6- 1, 270 pound sopho more Cordie Creenlea and "little" Bruce Wright. ("Little" Bruce is 6-5, 300 pounds.) The kicking duties will belong to two-time All- MECA place kicker se nior David Parkinsori. Parkinson nailed 38 of 40 extra points and hit on 11 of 23 field goal attempts last season. Tim Egerton will handle the kick-off receiving duties for the Hornets 895 Peters Creek Pkwy Winston-Salem, NC (919)773-1395 4117 Romaine St Greensboro. NC (919) 299-1395 329 No Mam St High Point. The defense will be anchored by intenor lineman Dan Paskins (6- 3, 255) and senior Rod Bratcher (6-2, 260). Ju niors Corey Felton (6-4, 220) and Mike McCain (6-3', 240) are the likely starters. Ray Knott and Greg Johnson will also give the Hornets the defensive prowness needed for the "bees". Junior Eric Wain- wright is the Hornets most noted linebacker this season. Wainwright averaged seven tackles per game and inter cepted five passes (two for TD's). Fellow junior starter Clint Bethea also returns. Andrew Logullo heads the list for the open slot. The secondary is in great shape this season with senior strong safety Marvin Bright (6- 3, 205), Reggie John son, Eric Dine, and ju nior Marc Ware. Bright averaged seven tackles a game and Johnson stole four interceptions in 1987. The Hornet's Nest is strong enough to pre vent the Howard Bison from repeating. The pressure is obviously on the Bison, since no team has repeated in the MEAC in the past five seasons.
