Smith University Golden Bulls Will Armed and ex tremely dangerous with a vaulted passing attack and a defense that ranked sixth in the na tion in the passing and scoring categories. These attributes should lead the 1988 edition of the team to successes in THE YEAR OF THE BULL. Marvin Bartee, 5-9 160 pound senior pound senior, returns as the 14th best re ceiver in the nation's division II ranks with his 45 catches for 614 yards and four touch downs. He averaged 4.1 yards per catch last year. . Other promising re ceivers are 6-1 170 pound junior Joachim Weinberg from Hamp ton, Virginia, who had 16 catches for 281 yards and two touch downs, 6-3 203 junior■ tight end Rodney Mar tin from Pinehurst, North Carolina who had nine catches for 114 yards, 6-0 180 ju nior Terry Jeter from Spartanburg, South Carolina who had 16 catches for 221 yard' and 6-4 230 tight end William Ford from Charlotte, N.C. who had six catches for 60 yards. MaTirice Flowers is the 6-4 205 pound Quarterback from m ■m. ‘‘4 J. C. Smith Coach Horace Small issteadily re-utalizing the Golden Bulls program with the help of Roderock Campbell (center) and John Terry (offensive tackle). Sophomore Maurice "Mo" Flowers is one of ten best young QB's in the conference. Charlotte, North Car olina who will engineer the Golden Bulls pass ing attack. He corh- pleted 70 passes of 166 attempts for five touchdowns and 802 yards. At running back, 5-9 190 strongman Barron Jones rushed 137 times for 516 yards in his rookie campaign. He is the leader in the back- field. All CIAA center William Wyatt, senior from Houston, Texas, returns with his 6-4 270 steady frame. The defense gets even stronger with the return of second team All CIAA Michael Ballen of Conway, South Car olina at defensive, end. The senior had 31 so los, 70 total tackles, and four fumble recov eries last year. Ronald Capers, 6-2 220 senior from Beau fort, South Carolina, tackles in the Centra- Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). Six'One 170 junior Willie Lee Cole, Jr. from West End, North Car olina is a defensive back who had 21 solos and 52 total tackles and TheYear Of The Bull had a Bull's high 68 solos and 140 total tackles and two fumble recoveries at his linebacker position. This could be his year. He had one of the highest number of total two interceptions. Senior Morton Copeland, 6-3 220 from Miami, Florida, had 31 solos and 77 total tackles, one inter ception and six quar terback sacks at 'inebacker. Senior Michael Hamil ton, 6-1 237, had 47 solo and 90 total tack les at his linebacker po sition. Michael King, 6-3 190 From Miami, Florida, had 40 solos and 52 total tackles and three interceptions at his de fensive backfield. Senior Anthony Lin- yard, 5-11 175 from Beaufort, South Car olina, had 38 solos and 83 total tackles at this defensive back position and four interceptions for 111 yards returned, a team high. Others to watch for are 6-3 210 Alvin, South Carol i na 'inebac-ker Otis Pri- oleau, and 6-4 275 of fensive lineman John Terry who could be all CIAA material. Junior Darrin Kelly kicked eight of eleven extra points and five field goals for 23 total points. The 6-0 160 pounder is from South ern. Pines, North Car olina. The Bulls hope to be better defensively im proving on the 11.2 points per game that they gave up last year and better offensively getting more than the 11.7 points per game last year. "We have been pro gressing every year," said Coach Horace Small, "and we believe that we can progress even more. In the last game of the season with tough Division I- AA Alabama State in the Turkey Day Classic in Montgomery, Alabama, we saw that we could play well with some very good competi tion."
