Boney On August 18, 1990 four of the North Carolina A&T Karate Students participated in one of the few tournaments held in Greensboro. The tournament was sponsored by Pizza Hut. The four karate students included Malachi Parsons, Derek Hart, Milton Pittman, and Jawanza Moseley. The tournament was a great success for the Aggie team. Derek Hart participated in the fighting. Kata, and self- defense events. Hart had the winning edge after performing his Kata and receiving first place. The motivated karateka went on to win first place in fighting and the self- defense competition. Malachi Parsons won fifth place in the fighting competition and continued with a second place win in the Kata performances. As the tournament progressed, it became even more evident that the Aggies would be the tournaments top winners. Milton Pittman started by taking second place in the junior division White and Yellow belt Kata competition. He proceeded to fake second place in fighting and in the self-defense competition. Jawanza Moseley virtually dominated every event he participated in. Moseley quickly eliminated all of the competitors in his division to secure first place in the Kata competition, first place in the fighting competition and first place in the self defense competition. The head instructor and coach. Dr. Gilbert Casterlow, praised the Aggie competitors for the excellent way they represented the A&T State University karate team. More recently the Aggies participated in another round of tournament competition in Burlington. N.C. Steve Harper, a senior. weapons competition. After an excellent performance with the Tonfa, Harper was awarded first place and the Aggies were off to another great display. Derek Hart and Milton Pittman were winners again. Derek placed first in the Yellow belt Kata competition and Milton battled his way to a first place award in Kata anc newest Aggie Black belt karateka, fought in Black belt competition for the first time and secured a very respectable second place trophy. The A&T karate team entered four competitors in the Greensboro tournament and earned 11 trophies out of 12 possibilities for a win. Five Aggie karatekas competed in last year and in previous years, indicate that the North Carolina A&T karate team continues to be the dominate competition in North Carolina and the Southeastern United Stales." Harper's final challenge in the Brown belt division was the a second place win ir the Kumite competition. After receiving thirc place in the Kate competition Tony Tayloi fought in White anc Yellow belt competition, eliminating all of the competition, to take first place. Willie Hairston, the the Burlington tournament and the Aggies brought home nine trophies given ten opportunities to win.
