Miss N.C. A&T Retains Aggie
Pride
By M.A. Pharr
Selma, North Carolina
may not be the Selma
that Martin Luther King,
Jr., marched through,
nor one of the states
most recognized towns,
but in the hearts and
minds of N.C. A&T stu
dents, faculty and
alumni it is known as the
‘Queen's City”. Miss
Sharon Jenkins is Miss
N.C. A&T State Univer
sity for 1990-1991. She
is from Selma, N.C. Just
five years ago, Sharon's
sister, Debra was cho
sen for the same honor.
It's a first at N.C. A&T
and will probably be
some time before it is
duplicated (sisters be
ing crowned Miss N.C.
A&T).
Sharon is the daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Harris
Lee Jenkins. She has
six brothers (Harris, An
thony, Spencer, Ter
rance, Willie and Ebony)
as well as her sister De
bra.
Miss Jenkins is a
chemistry major with a
career goal of being a
pathologist. “1 plan to
spend two additional
years at A&T for gradu
ate studies, and then I
hope to enroll at the
University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill
for medical school,” said
Ms. Jenkins.
Up until the present,
she has been active in
the American Medical
Society, NAACP, and
Gospel Choir. In her
college career she has
served as Miss Fresh
man and Miss Gospel
Choir.
Miss Jenkins is
blessed with beauty,
charisma, and intellect,
but her strongest quality
could be an inner
blackness that runs as
deep as the Nile. “A
black college campus
queen really needs to
be a God-fearing per
son. She should be one
who loves herself, as
well as others. She
should be open-minded
and aware of her history
and heritage, because
that is the backbone of
our stability,” said Ms.
Jenkins.
Miss N.C. A&T has set
goals for the 1990-1991
Sharon Jenkins
academic year, and she
has already accom
plished others. “I've
established an organi
zation on campus called
'Queens' ”, said Jenk
ins. “The purpose is to
promote unity. We will
be doing things in the
community and making
people more aware of
black history,” added
Ms. Jenkins. She admits
being Miss A&T State
University is a full-time
job, but she enjoys her
role to the fullest. “I will
do alot of traveling and
speaking on behalf of
the Aggies family,” she
said. “Miss N.C. A&T
should represent the
essence of the true
black woman”, she
added.
Miss Jenkins credits
her parents and their
guidance for steering
her in the right direction.
“My parents raised me in
a Christian environ
ment,” she said. “When
you are raised in that
type household every
thing else falls into
place”, she added.
Ask why she choose
N.C. A&T over other
colleges she re
sponded: “I've always
known I would attend a
black college in North
Carolina. N.C. A&T not
only has some of the
top programs in black
colleges, they have
some of the best in the
country.”
Miss N.C. A&T 1990-
1991 is also Miss Na
tional College Alumni
Hall of Fame 1990-
1991. Miss Jenkins won
this BET televised
pageant less than one
and a half months ago in
Atlanta, Georgia. “A lot
of people don't know
the magnitude of this
honor, but I will repre
sent it with as much
pride as I do as Miss
N.C. A&T”, she stated.
”1 Vvill'never forget the
oeople I met (Kim
Fields, Henry Aaron,
Janet Dubois, Tasha
Scott, Vince Williams)
nor the total experi
ence”, she added.
Sharon is a very warm,
bright and well-rounded
individual. She com
mented on two topics
that are imported to
both the world and black
people.
a) The Iraq-Kuwait Sit
uation:
“I don't agree with
what the American gov
ernment is doing. It's
alot more political than
they'll ever admit and it's
having a direct effect on
our economy. It's not
quite as important to us
as the propaganda
makes it appear.”
b) The demise of the
black male:
“First of all the black
woman has the respon
sibility of standing be
hind the black man.
Since the first slave
ship came to America
the majority has under
mined the intelligence
and integrity of the black
male. It's our
responsibility to make
sure our children are
truly educated about
the black man. We need
to teach them because
others have no
intention of doing so.”
Miss Jenkins elabo
rated on “Aggie Pride”.
Her analysis should
make Aggie students,
alumni and fans proud.
“It's all about brother
hood. Historically Ag
gies have had no prob
lems in fighting for the
things that they felt
strongly about. The
marches and the sit-ins
are etched in history
books across the coun
try. History itself is in the
walls of N.C. A&T State
University”, said Ms.
Jenkins.
