AC Phoenix. October 1990, Page 9 NCBR To Present Driving Miss Daisy The North Carolina Black Repertory Com pany will be starting its engine when the com pany opens the award winning play and film, ‘Driving Miss Daisy," by Alfred Uhry Oct. 19, 20, 21, 26, 27, and 28 in the Arts Council Theatre located at 610 Coliseum Drive. ‘Driving Miss Daisy" has received a great deal of publicity in the past couple of years, as well as being the butt of many jokes. Everybody has been driving Miss Daisy one way or the other. The question may arise as to why the North Carolina Repertory Company would select this particular play to of fer the Winston-Salem community. The com pany's production will focus very closely on the play's black charac ter, ‘Hoke Coieburn,' Miss Daisy's chauffeur. Is ‘Hoke" just a stereo type of a black man ser vicing an old Southern lady or if people were to acutely observe this chauffeur, could they find something more profound? And could that which is discovered be used to improve the quality of black and white relationships in the city of Winston- Salem which has a very real race relations prob lem? Those are some of the questions for which the company hopes to offer some insight with its production. The ‘Black Rep", in addition to having an excellent reputation for artistic quality, is also known for its extraordinary and in novative techniques used to reveal new found discoveries in a script which usually has some significant mean ing about the society and world in which we live. The North Carolina Black Repertory will use two directors in staging its production of ‘Driving Miss Daisy," one black and one white: Larry Leon Ham lin and Patricia W. Toole, respectively. Hamlin is the founder of the North Carolina Black Repertory Com pany and has served as the company's execu tive and artistic director for nearly 12 years. Un der his direction, the Company is considered the most important pro fessional black theatre in the country. It pro duced and hosted the ‘1989 National Black Theatre Festival."
