Page 8, AC Phoenix, January, 1992 WSSU Centennial Celebrates History of Education, Service Winston-Salem State University will commemorate its Centennial in 1992 with a year-long celebration tied to the theme, “Continuing a 100-year Commitment to Excellence.” “This is truly a great time in our history,” said Chancellor Cleon F. Thompson, Jr., the university’s eighth chief administrator since its founding as Slater Industrial Academy in a one-room building on September 28, 1892, by Simon Green Atkins. “Just as Dr. Atkins envisioned Slater as a means for improving life for blacks at all levels, so too does Winston-Salem State today,” Thomp,son said. “The difference is, our mission hasn’t so much changed as it has broadened - to reach all people who have a desire for higher education - and who, as our motto says, ‘ Enter to learn, de part to serve.’” The Centennial activities will un derscore both the institution’s past and its vision for the future. Among the scheduled events are an African- American quilt exhibition, a women’s luncheon with First Lady Barbara Bush as the invited speaker, a concert featuring the popular gospel group “The Winans,” and a Centennial Gala celebration during Homecoming Dr. Samuel Proctor, a former chancellor of N.C. A&T Unive 'sity and a respected African-American educator, will lead off the obser vance during an opening convoca tion on January 15. The convoca tion follows a flag-raising ceremony that will be held in front of Blair Hall, the administration building. On February 7, an opening recep tion will be held in the Diggs Gallery for a new art exhibition of African-American quilts. The Winans, the Grammy Award winning gospel group, are the fea tured artists in a Centennial concert on March 4.
