f 3 !■ sftl The AC Phoenix February 1998 Page 19 Northwest Child Development Council Receives Crosby Tournament Grant Northwest Child Development, Inc. is the recipient of a $1,000 grant to be used for scholar ships from The Crosby National Celebrity Golf Tournament thanks to Jim Hart, Walter McDowell, Mark E. Cook and David Hampton, Hart, McDowell, Cook and Hampton played on a team sponsored by Wachovia Bank of North Carolina and won the right to designate a portion of the purse as a winner in the miiiion dollar tournament held last June. The Woodruff-Hills Scholarship Fund, sponsored by Northwest, is named to commemorate the lives and legacies of two local women - Mazie S. Woodruff and Barbara Behrens Hills - whose advocacy on behalf of Forsyth County citizens helped to empower those who are under served and gave them hope. This year’s theme, “Legacy 2000 - ChildrenFirst,” represents a three-year strategy to enrich the learning experiences of young children in Northwest Child Care Centers through granting educational scholarships for teachers; purchasing equipment, books and other supplies; and providing emergency scholarships for families in crisis. Northwest Child Development operates 12 centers in Forsyth, Stokes, Davie and Yadkin coun ties. The Crosby, the premier charitable celebrity golfing event in the county, will hold its 56th tournament in 1998. The first tournament was held in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., as a friendly gesture by Bing Crosby to aid financially beleaguered touring pros and it began the concept of Pro-Am golfing events. The Crosby attracts international celebrities from the entertainment and sports arenas who team with amateur golfers in this well known charitable tournament. Winners designate their share of the purse to non-profit organizations of their choice. The tournament focuses its chari table efforts on substance abuse prevention and education. Since 1986, the Crosby has raised over $13 million, with nearly $5 million going to organizations involved in the fight against drug abuse.
