Disaster Preparedness by Khalida Lovell Disaster is defined by Webster’s Dictionary as an event that causes distress; a sudden mis fortune. Therefore anything that causes dis- tfess to an individual can be called a disaster. Disaster can be a fire, climatic conditions, dis cordant relations, failure to pass a grade, or loss of job etc. Disaster Preparedness is written for each of us to personally evaluate how prepared we are? How often in a da next day. Before you go to bed, iron garments or get up earlier. Place two garments up front in the closet, knowing one of them will be worn. If you are tardy because you do not like to get up in the morn ing, think about how blessed you are that you can get up. Words from experience, “Get Up On Time!” Do you have a plan of action for being on time? If you are a student in school, how are your grades? 1 have tried hard in life not to judge myself nor my three daughters. What I have done is discussed thoroughly the importance of being responsible for self. Knowledge is a valuable commodity and overlooked by most. When communicating knowledge to young people, there has got to be some means in getting and keeping their attention. Knowledge itself is power! Being knowledgeable will allow one to be prepared to succeed successfully in school. Now, if you choose not to seek knowledge, then it clearly indicates there is confusion in your understanding of what school is! What plan of action do you have for suc cessfully completing school? Financial lack plays havoc with mass humanity. We are constantly chasing after money, failing to realize there is no need to run after it, it will come to us if we use this power of knowledge creatively. By exercising the will of self to be creatively productive will generate all the money you need. Now, if your life has been full of lack, 1 suggest you go to the trash can and dump all your mental thoughts in it, and start over again without the influence of anyone molding your thoughts on the value of you. Begin to dream of success and prosperity and perfect health. Begin to feel happy and peaceful. In a matter of moments you will begin to feel good. You will begin to feel your worth. You are now rich! Keep in mind, your emotions are the ticket to your success or your failure in life. Prepare yourself daily and you will reap the benefits! Now, what plan of action have you invest ed in for manifesting abundance in your life? Climatic Conditions & Uncontrollable Events Mr. Tony D’Elia of the Federal Emergency Management Agency Disaster Field Office (FEMA-l 196-Dr-New York) provided infor mation regarding Disaster Preparedness. “Develop a family disaster plan. There are four basic steps: leam about hazards and how to prepare for each. Talk about disaster pre paredness with family. Put plan into action. Practice it” I remember when I was a senior in high school, our house caught on fire while my father was fixing the furnace. Even though we had insurance and the house even tually became brand new and bigger, emo tionally, I was bent out of shape. The Disaster Preparedness can help eliminate these feel ings. Each family member can emotionally understand disaster and be equipped to move forward with insight and information because the family took the time to prepare itself. Whether it is a natural disaster or man made disaster, seek knowledge and discussion with family. Identify escape routes, have renter’s insurance, fire-detectors and fire extinguishers. Let family preparedness be an experience that sheds knowledge. It could save a life! For additional information, you can reach Mr. D’Elia at (518)458-2913 New York. What plan have you designed for the safety of family during a disaster? “Mr. Welton Sadler of Winston-Salem Forsyth County Office of Emergency Management emphasizes the need to be pre pared to take care of family for at least the first 72 hours of a disaster.” Every home should be equipped with a 72-Hour Emergency Kit which includes the following items: • Non-perishable food • Water (one gallon per person per day) • First aid supplies • Tools and emergency supplies (flash lights, battery operated radio, extra batteries and money/credit cards) • Clothing and bedding • Special items for infants, elderly or dis abled family members “The local Emergency Management Office works to identify and analyze the hazards that may face the county. Contingency plans are developed for each hazard. TTie plans are reg ularly tested, refined and tested again, all with the goal of protecting or saving lives and property. By providing expertise, support and personnel, the office carries out theme of cooperation, coordination and unity.” For more information, you can reach Melton Sadler at (336)724-6161.
