Dunleith Avenue Winston-Salem, NC 27105 722-9841 ‘D’ Dominates NAACP Image Awards The 34th annual NAACP Image Awards ceremony was dominated by Denzel Washington. “D” won awards for Best Actor (“John Q”), Best Supporting Actor (“Antwone Fisher”) and his directorial debut “Antwone Fisher” won Best Picture at the March 8 gala in Los Angeles. Spike Lee and Flalle Berry were inducted into the Image Awards’ Hall of Fame. Evening emcee Cedric the Entertainer didn’t take home any awards, though he was nominated for his role in “Barbershop” (which took jabs at Rosa Parks, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Rev. Jesse Jackson) and for his TV variety show. “Brown Sugar”, the hip hop love story, didn’t bring home any awards, despite winning a record eight nominations. Major network CBS’ “The Rosa Parks Story” was selected as Best TV Movie and Angela Bassett won Best TV Movie Actress for her portrayal of Mrs. Parks. Bassett was also chosen as Best Movie Actress for “Sunshine State,” a drama. Tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams were presented with the NAACP President’s Award for the on-court excellence, and activist actor Danny Glover received the Chairman’s Award for his work against the death penalty and human rights advocacy. On Wednesday, April 2, June Lucas, coordinator of special programs at MESDA, will give a program entitled The Swisegood School of Cabinetmaking Revisited: A New Corner Cupboard in the MESDA Collection. The discussion will pertain to a recently acquired Davidson County corner cupboard, made by the cabinetmakers Mordica Collins, John Swisegood, Jonathan Long, and Jesse Clodfelter. On Wednesday, May 7, Raymond Patrick Dempsey, senior interpreter andlecturer at MESDA, will give a program on Antique Tureens: Serving Soup With Style. Hidden Treasures: Lunch at MESDA is held in the MESDA Auditorium of the Frank L. Horton Center on the first Wednesday of every month at 12:30 p.m. Guests are encouraged to bring a bagged lunch or order a boxed lunch by calling (336) 721-7360.
