Michelle was a loving mother of
four children between the ages of
three to seven. Living in Cabrini
Greens, one of the roughest hous
ing projects in Chicago, she barely
had enough food to feed her chil
dren nor did she have enough
money to clothe them. Her source
of income was from government
aid and her children’s fathers.
Michelle was a beautiful woman.
Her skin was of a dark- chocolate
complexion, she had long, black,
thick hair, a beautiful smile and a
figure that all of the men loved and
every woman envied. Michelle was
the kind of mother who put every
thing that she had into her chil
dren. The little food that she had,
she split it between her four chil
dren; even if that meant that she
was not going to eat that day. She

taught her children how to love
each other and how to stick
together; she protected them and
constantly encouraged them to be
somebody.
What could separate a mother’s
love from her children?
At the age of five, I
could remember the
first sign of trouble
when our mother was
fired from her job at the
post office. After that,
she would not come
home as much. When
she did come home,
she would be drunk or
strung out on drugs. I
can remember my
mother preparing the
cocaine and snorting it
right in front of us.
However, the ultimate
change in my mother’s
behavior did not occur
until she tried crack-
then she was hooked.
My mother did not
come home for weeks

TO LEAD KATE B.

CHARITABLE
TRUST
(Winston-Salem, NC) - The
Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust
and Wachovia Bank, N.A.,
trustee, have announced that Dr.
Karen McNeil-Milier has been
named president of the Kate B.
Reynolds Charitable Trust. The
trust is one of the largest philan
thropic organizations in North
Carolina, with annual distributions
of approximately $24 million.
In this role, McNeil-Miller will
supervise the trust staff and be
responsible for relations with
trust’s Executive Advisory Council
and Advisory Boards, as well as
the trustee in its policy setting
role. She will also formulate oper
ational strategy and policy, and
present the trust and both the
Poor and Needy, and Health Care
Divisions of the trust. She will
