Congressman Seeks
Hearing On Voter ID
Congressional hearings are being requested to look into whether the
U.S. Department of Justice improperly approved Georgia’s voter ID law,
which is currently being blocked by a federal court injustice. The law
would require residents to show a driver’s license or purchase a photo
identification card before voting. According to the Voting Rights Act of
1965, Georgia is required to receive federal approval for any changes to
its voting laws due to the state’s history of discrimination at the polls. It
is believed that the law was approved in August by Justice Department
political appointees in charge, despite staff attorneys warning against
that action, for fear that it would cause Black people not to vote.
HBCU Received Black Male
Recruitment Grants
FORT VALLEY, GA—^The University System of Georgia has awarded
historically Black Fort Valley State University and nine other institutions
in the state with African American Male Initiative grants to help increase
Black male enrollment. The grants, in amounts from $15,000 to
$30,000, are expected to take care of program costs that try and recruit
Black males while they are in high school. Walton County and FVSU
have joined together to assist 25 Black males through next summer in
a program called Dual Enrollment and Collaborative Learning for
Access to a Rewarding Education (DECLARE). The main objective of
the program for the county is to increase the graduation rate in 2005 of
34 percent to 75 percent by 2009. The DECLARE program will have the
participants go on field trips, and attend seminars and classes at Fort
Valley State.
