MARTIN L. KING NOON
HOUR COMMEMORATION

(Winston-Salem, NC) The 26th annual observance of the birth of Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr, will occur Monday, January 16, 2006 at 12
o’clock noon from M. C. Benton Convention Center on the holiday
marking his 77th birthday. The keynote speaker will be Dr. James D.
Ballard, retired pastor of United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church
(1959-2004) and the chairman of the local Congress of Racial Equality
(CORE) from 1961-62. He was one of the first two black students to
attend Duke University Divinity School where he earned the Master of
Divinity Degree in 1966 among the Top Ten Students in a Class of 177.
The former teacher and counselor in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County
Schools was a chaplain at Winston-Salem State University. He is a
native of High Point, served four years in the United States Air Force,
was salutatorian of the class of 1962 at Shaw University, and is respect
ed throughout the country as a skilled and dynamic orator.
The theme of this year’s commemoration is “A Dream Conceived; A
Dream to Be Fulfilled.” Highlights of the program will include a special
tribute to Rosa Parks who is often described as the “mother of the civil
rights movement” because of her refusal to give up her bus seat
December 1, 1955 sparking a boycott that lasted 381 days and cata
pulted a 26-year-old preacher named Martin Luther King, Jr. into a
major civil rights leader. Deloris “D” Smith Wylie, Ed.D and Dr. Sir
Walter Mack, Jr. will be awarded this year’s MLK “Dare to Make a
Difference” honors.

MEMORATION founded and organized by Mutter D. Evans is the
longest on-going local observance having begun in 1981. It is partially
sponsored by the Winston-Salem Human Relations Department and the
Winston-Salem NAACP. The event is open to the public at no charge.
