Hillary Clinton ^ vs.^f Barack Obama
By: Harry R. Davidson, Ph.D
—Guest Columnist—
The political clash between Senator Barack Obama and Senator Hillary
Clinton is a reflection of the dilemma faced by Frederick Douglass, who fought
for Black citizenship and the right of Blacks to vote and also championed
women’s rights in his support of the White women’s suffrage movement during
the mid-1800s. Douglass participated in the first Women’s Rights Convention
in Seneca Falls in 1848 and signed the Declaration of Sentiments. The lead
ership of the women’s movement, including Elizabeth Cady Stanton, credited
Douglass with the passage of the declaration. Douglass published an editori
al on “The Rights of Women’’ In the July 28, 1848 edition of the North Star.
Senator Barack Obama’s victory In Iowa is being herald by many Blacks
who see it as a sign of improved race relations, though he faces a powerful
woman also running for the office. Douglass broke away from the women’s
suffrage movement during the years from 1865 to 1870 due to the fact that suf
frage leaders Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony refused to sup
port the 15th Amendment which granted Black men the right to vote because it
excluded women. Douglass argued that it was important to secure the rights
of Black males before working to achieve the rights of women. After Blanks
were given the right to vote he renewed his support of suffrage for women.
Senator Obama’s support among Blacks is not monolithic. Black leaders
who have committed themselves to supporting Senator Clinton justified this by
claiming that Obama doesn’t have a practical chance of winning the
Democratic presidential nomination. The fact that Senator Obama won Iowa
shoots holes in their rationalizations. Now they will be forced to show their
hands. In an interview, one Black female underscored the fact that she is sup
porting Clinton because Hillary is a woman. Some Blacks claim Obama is not
Black enough.
Barack Hussein Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. His African father
was a member of Kenya’s Luo tribe and his White mother was born in Wichita,
Kansas. Obama’s parents separated when he was two-years old and later
divorced. He has openly shared his struggle to deal with social perceptions
and reactions to his multiracial heritage, including the use of alcohol, marijua
na and cocaine as an adolescent. He associates his problems with the fact
that he rarely saw his father. Sounds like a Black male’s profile to me!
The current choices for the support of the Democratic Party has once again
become a conscious and subconscious question of race and gender. Will
Senator Clinton be the first female nominee or will Senator Obama become the
first Black nominee? Which is the country likely to elect as president? Perhaps
the greater question should be, will Blacks benefit from the election of any of
the candidates for the presidency? The American political system was
designed and will continue to serve the best interest of elite corporate powers.
Even when a new president or a new ship’s captain is selected, like in the Star
Trek movies, the mythical Capt. James T. Kirk and his fellow USS Enterprise
crew members continue to seek out new frontiers for the profit of an elite few.
No election has changed this reality. Don’t get your hopes up that the coming
election and the events thgit follow it will be different from the course that has
already been charted. The perpetuation of the race problem foments racism,
prejudice and discrimination. Capitalism and White Supremacy are intrinsical
ly linked. By design Capitalism does not provide jobs for all workers. This cre
ates job competition, which serves to keep wages low and enhances profits.
Limited access to education and job opportunities among Blacks and other
minorities prohibits competition and results in disproportionate unemployment.
The criminalization of the population creates a profitable prison industry.
In addition, once these citizens acquire a felony conviction, they can never
vote, thus decreasing the chance of Blacks and minorities mustering voting
power. Blacks and people of color continue to be the victims in all these areas,
perpetuating the myth of White Supremacy. The political question that must be
addressed is, will the masses of Blacks and Whites be able to change a sys
tem that is designed to perpetuate elitism? Regardless of who occupies the
White House, exploitive White Capitalists are not likely to relinquish power.
