Valkyrie Taps
Six Freshmen
In Society
Valkyrie, Honorary Sophomore
Council, tapped six rising Sopho
mores on Wednesday, May 10, during
chapel period. Girls tapped were:
Shirley Warner, Elizabeth Young,
Doris Turner, Ann Perry, Florence
Ferguson, and Laura Sanford. Miss
Laura Tillett, professor of English,
was announced an honorary member
and faculty advisor for the new
Valkyrie at the tapping service. The
girls were initiated into Valkyrie on
Wednesday, 17. A banquet was
given the initiates and Miss lillett
that night by outgoing Valkyries.
Alumnae of the council were also
present at the banquet.
Shirley Warner, from Greenville,
N. C., is president of the rising Soph
omore class and served as president
of the freshmen class. She was rep
resentative to Legislature from North
Dormitory. Shirley is a member of
Phi Mu sororiety.
Elizabeth Young, of Decatur, Ga
served as representative to Student
Christian Association this year and
will act in that same capacity for
next year. Slie is a member of Alpha
Delta Pi sororiety.
Doris Turner served as student
government proctor in North Dor
mitory this year and will serve on
Student Christian Association Cab
inet for the coming year. Doris is
from Raleigh, N. C. and a member of
Alpha Eta Sigma.
Laura Sanford, Hendersonville, N
C., was freshman representative to
Boarding Student Council this year
and was elected to the office of
secretary of the rising Sophomore
class.
Ann Perry and Florence Fergu
son, both pledges of Alpha Gamma
Delta, are Charlotte girls. Ann was
elected Treasurer of the student
body for the coming year. She served
on the War Service Committee this
year. Florence served on Student
Christian Association Cabinet an

Traditional Senior chapel was held
on Friday, May 5. At this chapel,
incoming student body officers pre
sented outgoing student body officers
gifts of appreciation. The Senior
Class filed out of chapel after the
awards were made, leaving their
class section empty for the incoming
Senior class. Each class left its sec
tion and went into that it will hold
next year. , . ,
Edna Adams, president of student
government, presented Anne Hatcher,
outgoing president, with china in
Anne’s pattern. Betsy Hodges, pres
ident of boarding student council,
gave her predecessor, Mabel Beach,
a house robe. Peggy Bell Benoit re
ceived a monogramed linen set from
her successor, Marie Sitton, president
of the day student council. Emmy
Wood, president of Student Chris
tian Council gave a bracelet to Lou
Wayland, ber predecessor. Annelle
McCall received a tennis racquet
from Ruth King who is taking over
her duties as president of Athletic
Association.
Junior-Senior banquet, given by
the Junior class in honor of the Se
niors, was held at the Myers Park
Club on Wednesday evening May
3, at 7:00 p. m. Jane King, the chair
man of Junior-Senior banquet com
mittee, acted as toastmistress. Mrs.
J. M. Godard was guest speaker.
“Canteen 44” was tbe theme of
the banquet. All Juniors wore white
dresses and red, white, and blue
crepe aprons. A printed program
with a cover showing a canteen door
was given. Red, white, and blue
flowers decorated the tables.
Edna Adams, president of tbe stu
dent body and past president of the
Junior class, welcomed the guests.
A toast to the Senior class was given
by Frances Bryan, the new Senior
class president, and Eleanor Lazenby
Biggers, the president of the out
going Senior class, gave the response
for the Seniors.
The Canteen Cuties, a group of
Juniors, sang “Smoke Gets in Your
Eyes” and“ Just the Way You Look
Tonight”. Betty Ellis gave her in
terpretation of Virginia O’Brien sing
ing “Rockaby Baby”. Betty Schaaff
and Polly Foglesong gave a dance
on Deborah and Maude.

Miss Jean Brown of Troutman was
crowned May Queen in the annual
May Day exercises held in the Queens
College anq)hitheater Friday after
noon, May 5. She represented the
spirit of the college in the program
theme, a depiction of the develop
ment of Queens College illustrated
by typical dances. The dances pre
sented were the Virginia Reel, Big
Ap])le, Strauss Waltz, and the Pick
aninny dance.
Mrs. Eleanor Lazenby Biggers was
maid of honor and the May Court

Immediately following the pageant,
the Charlotte chapter of the Queens
Alumnae Association had an “open
house” for all campus guests in the
Blair Day Student Union. High
school seniors who were invited for
hospitality day were given a luncheon
at yie outdoor grill. The five national
social sororities also held “open
house” for all guests.

o’clock and last until Wednesday afternoon, May 31, at 4:00
o’clock.
