Volume No. 5 The Spectator J. F. WEBB HIGH SCHOOL, OXFORD, N. C., DECEMBER 20. 1968 No. 3 ’%• TERESA CURRIN Student Council Elects Teresa Vivacious, industrious and intelli gent are adjectives that help to de scribe Teresa Currin. Teresa was elected Student of the Month for November at the Student Council meeting on December 9, 1968. Attend any school or church-spon sored function, and more than likely you’ll find Teresa there working dil igently. She is a member of the Latin, French, and Science clubs, and also of the F. T, A. and F. H. A. Her efforts to make each or ganization better are appreciated by many and they quite often bring satisfactory results. Scholastically, Teresa has been an asset to Webb. She has received the Scholastic Letter every year. Last year she was inducted into the Na tional Honor Society. Webb had confidence enough to elect her as their treasurer of the Student Council two years ago. Her class also recognizes ability at hand, for she represented it in Homecom ing Court the past two years. Also, this year she is Senior Class treas urer. Teresa participates in many activi ties other than school supported ones. She enjoys her work with her church and has recently begun work concerning a youth organiza tion for all of Oxford. As one can see, Teresa deserves all the recognition of being Student of the Month, Wanda And Sandra Chosen By FFA A mistletoe-adorned cafeteria was the setting for the F.F.A. Christmas dance held on December 11. The girls of the F.H.A. were invited to attend along with the dates of the Agriculture boys. Music was sup- .plied by he fabulous “Midnighters.” . Latin Club Enjoys Christmas Program December 20, Latin Clubs had Christmas programs highlighted by the singing of Christmas carols and by the reading of the Christmas sto ry, all in Latin. The freshman clubs presented “lo Satumalis”, a comedy translated from Latin. In ancient times Saturn- alis was the winter festival of the Romans, comparable to Christmas. Besides the servants, boys in the comedy were Martin Lee, Lanny Dillehay, Lyn Bryan, Ronald Smith, Bruce Miller, Reuben Daniel, Jeff Averett, Dalton Newman, Ronald Pruitt, and Waverly Barnes. In Latin II groups, O. Henry’s “Gift of the Magi” was dramatized. Brad Cannady and “Charlie” Sloan, program chairmen, wrote the nar ration. In the first group Dowell Godwin and Debbie Yancey nlayed the roles of Jim and Della. In the second group the players were Bill Wilkie and Linda Montague. J. F. Webb Band Marches In Parades The J. F. Webb band, ‘Svarmed” by their enthusiasm, marched through hard, cold practices and on to the parades. The band has given the spectators the wonderful opportunity of hear ing the fine music that they produce by marching down the main streets of Chase City, Virginia, Creedmoor, and Oxford. The band members will tell you that they have really been practic ing and marching very hard during sixth period and after school to get as close to perfection as they can. They have done a splendid job. FFA Sweethearts Are Chosen WANDA DICKERSON Pep Club Cleans Dirty Gymnasium Under the leadership of Coach Wood, the Pep Club made itself busy by cleaning our gym a few weeks ago. Floors were swept, walls washed, lockers cleaned out and trash cans labeled TRASH were dis tributed throughout the gym. This is the first time in several years that our g>’m has been clean. Con- graulations to the Pep Club on its great job. The “Barn,” as our gym is known, may not be much, but it’s all we’ve got, so take pride in it! Science Club Shows Dickens Film The second meeting of the Science Club was called to order on Decern ber 10, 1968, with President Hamlin Landis presiding. Two proposals were brought up at this meeting. The first was to appoint a refresh ment committee with Kitty Boswood acting as chairman. Having had the second proposal approved by the ad ministration, Mr. Travis told the club about a project he was inter ested in doing. This was to form groups to prepare demonstrations for the students at the D. N. Hix School about what they were study ing in science. Everyone was in fa vor of these two. For entertainment, a film was shown entitled, “A Charles Dickens’ Christmas.” After this, the meeting was adjourned. SANDRA BLACKWELL Hair Stylist Talks Td F.T.A. Members The November F. T. Barbecue Proves Very Successful In spite of peas, cigarettes, and other hinderanccs the band played on in the Christmas parade. Here they stop to pose for our Spectator photographer. From S:00 to 7:30 P.M. the J. F. Webb Student Council held its annual barbecue supper. Although the serving lasted over two hours, the Student Council members gave many hours the whole day long in order to make the barbecue a suc cess. The barbecue was supplied by Murphy House. The parents of student council members donated the potatoes for potato salad and other parents donated a large variety of delicious pies. To increase the num ber of tickets sold each day, the Student Council offered prizes of show tickets donated by the Or- pheum Theater and free chicken dinners donated by Sony's Restau rant. .Mso a prize of SIO was giv en to Dale Williford for beincr the high salesman of the whole ticket sale. Miss Averett’s home room won an ice cream party for being the home room with the greatest number of tickets sales. Free tickets were given to individual salesmen who sold ten tickets in the cam paign. Many thanks are given to the many people who made this barbe cue a success with a profit of about $620. Included in the number of people who made the barbecue a success are the Key Club members who directed traffic; the cafeteria help; the custodians; Mrs. Hart, the Webb dietician; the Student Council and the entire Webb student body and facultv. "0, Romeo, Romeo Seniors See Play All the seniors had a delightful experience on Wednesday night, No^ vember 13, as they took a trip backward in time. They visited the land of Shakespeare as they viewed his play, “Romeo and Juliet”. It was presented by the Louisburg Players. The play was a smashing success because everything was done with an air of professionalism. Af ter the excitement of flight, tragedy, and romance, the long ride home proved very dull. The sleepy stu dents returned to the D. N. Hix school about 12:10. The comments were ‘How’d you like Benvolio ? Wasn’t he the cutest thing? How’d you like Juliet’s dress?” Then the seniors went their separate ways home so that they might get some sleep so they would be bright-eyed for that day in school! Workshop Held By Future Homemakers On Thursday, November 21, in the Webb Cafetorium, the FHA held a Workshop designed to instruct those interested in beginning work on their Junior Homemaking De grees. Debbie Simpson, the degrees chairman, planned the program. Sev eral FHA’ers presented a skit de scribing the degrees one may be a- warded. These girls were Debbie Simpson, Marjorie Cash, Linda Huff, Wanda Dickerson, Cindy Boyd, and Sharon Mullen. After this presentation, the FHA officers helped the other girls on their degrees. French Clubs Have Christmas Spirit If today you heard “Joie sur la terre,” you were hearing our talent ed (?) French scholars sing their Christmas greetings in French. This was just one of the many things the French (Subs had on their pro grams. For their programs reading of birth of Chrjst were also done in French. As last year some of the French classes gave gifts to needy families and children. These gift.s (toys, clothes, and food) will help to make someone else’s Christmas a little brighter. French III Club really fiid some thing special thi.s year. Last Sunday night they had a French Christmas dinner complete with French foods at David Noel’s house. Each mem- b^vas responsible for bringing one item for the meal. The only “trick” to this meal was that everything had to be said in French! (That’s pretty frustrating when you want some turkey and you don’t know how to say ‘ Pass the turkey” in French.) In spite of all these dif ficulties though, everyone had a good time. Over your Christmas vacation all the French students and teachers hope you have a “Joyeux Noel.”
