C., February, 1951 Number 4 News Briefs New Students The Juniors welcome Helen Morgan from Belltown to their class. The Sophomores welcome Irene Boyd from Berea. The Seniors welcome Mattie Hawkins from Leaksville. One member of the Junior Class, Jimmy Taylor, has gone to Creed- moor, Congratulations, Joyce Congratulations to Joyce Clark for writing the poem, “Valentine”, which appears on the last page. Good work! Annual Pictures Smile now! That was the familiar saying when the photographer was here to take pictures for the Annual. P.T.A. Gives $25 The Oxford Parent Teacher’s As sociation presented the Student Coun cil with a $25 check to help decorate the girls’ restroom. The Student Coun cil plans to add to this amount. Material Donated Mrs. Ballard Norwood, president of Oxford P.T.A., donated twenty-five yards of material to aid in the girls’ restroom decoration. New Phonograph The Home Ec. Club has purchased a new phonograph. This is to be kept at the cottage and used at Home Ec. Club meetings. Congratulations, Homemakers. Student of the Month Gilbert Ragland, an active member of the Junior Class, has been chosen as student of the month, for February. Gilbert is the Vice-President of the Student Council, a member of the Beta Club, the captain of the O.H.S. Band, has a high scholastic average and is a good all round person. Other students who have previously been chosen as students of the month are Jean Hester, for January, and Frances Clayboi-ne for December. Congratulations, Band On February 15, the O.H.S. Band presented a most enjoyable program in Assembly. Band Attends Clinic Three members of the 0. H. S, Band were elected to attend the Eastern Division State Band Clinic at Eastern Carolina Teachers College at Greenville, February 2 and 3. The following pupils were the lucky three: Thomas Blalock, Trombone, Curtis Tillotson, Cornet, and Betty Sue Knott, Flute. 0. H. S. Boys Enter Service Oxford High School is proud to boast that 36 boys and girls who have formerly been students here have en tered some branch of service for their Uncle Sam. Young, Roy Crews, Jr., Joe Pruitt, Charles Brooks, Howard Buchanan, John Davis Carrington, Nellie Parrott, Lucille Chappell, Al fred Dean, George Irvin Moore, Ed gar Wilson and Wesley Burnette. Seniors Sponsor Talent Show The Senior Class of O.H.S. spon sored a talent show on Saturday, Jan uary 20, 1951, at eight o’clock. Prizes were donated by Penny Fur niture Company, George Currin Jew eler, Pryor’s, Williams Breedlove Com pany, Williams Drug Company, Ox ford Jewelry, Edward’s Jewelry and Leggett’s Department Store. Contestants The program consisted of the fol lowing: Announcer, Ted Rogers; Solo ists: Sara Crews, Harriet Arrington, Frank Daniel; Duet: Maxine Harris and Maurine Moon; Sextet: Della Dean, Betty Jo Harrell, Barbara Har ris, Frances Jones, Ann Howell, Rosalyn Lamb; Aycock String Band, composed of Sidney Ayscue, Ronnie Thompson, James Clayborne, Morris West; Dancers: Ernestine Dosher, Judy Gholson; Quartets: Bobby Dan iel, Frank Daniel, John Dean, Thomas Newton and the “Melody Four” com posed of Ben Moss, David Mangum, John Crumpler, Nathan Harris, Jr.; a negro sermon by Mr. C. F. Wild- man. Contestants were divided into groups and prizes were awarded to each group. The judges were Mr. Alex ander, Miss Lois Hester, and Mr. Willie Wrenn. Council Plans Field Day Wilton Wins County Tournament Wilton boys and girls overcame hard-playing Creedmoor teams here Saturday night, February 17, to win the county basketball championship honors. Mary Ann Vaughan, sharp-shoot ing Wilton player, was high scorer for the girls, getting 15 of their 25 points. Shirley James got 14 points for the losers. The final score for the girls’ game was Wilton 25, Creed moor 18. Close Fight for Boys In an overtime period, Wilton wrested the title from the defending Creedmoor quint to score a 42-41 vic tory. Johnny Brummitt was high scorer for Wilton with 20 points while Bill Adams led the Creedmore quint with 15 points. County Superintendent D. N. Hix presented trophies to the winners. Each member of the winning team also received a gold basketball. Again, this year, the Student Coun cil is planning a Field Day to be held sometime in May. A committee com posed of Ruth Hedgepeth, Gilbert Ragland, Eloise Gill, Sarah Hall, Frances Clayborne, Homer Hobgood, Heni*y Saye, and Joy Burwell has been appointed to make plans for the event. In previous years, com petition games have been played and a picnic style lunch has been enjoyed by all. These will probably be the plans for ’51. The Student Council has asked for the cooperation of every member of the student body, so that the Field Day this year will be bigger and bet ter than ever before. Music Groups To Enter Contest The music groups of the Oxford High School, under the direction of Mr. Virgil L. Alexander, will journey to Raleigh on March 14, to participate in the annual music contest which is held at Meredith College. The mixed chorus, boys’ glee club, girls’ glee club, and Junior chorus wdll partic ipate along with selected soloists and small groups. The city of Greensboro will be host to the winner of the Meredith College contests on April 11-12.
