Seniors Order
invitations
Emphasis was recently placed on May
31, when the Seniors selected their invita
tions.
A committee of seniors met with Mr.
Barber of Herf Jones to consider several
invitations. After much deliberation they
picked out six for presentation to the whole
class.
The invitation selected by the class is
white vellum with a gold school seal on
the front. Unlike former invitations, it
opens horizontally.
Future Teachers
To Chapel Hill
Three “future teachers” went with Mrs.
E. G. MeSwain, their sponsor, to the
second annual convention of the N. C.
Association of Teachers Clubs held in
Chapel Hill November 3.
Students going were Judy Dean, Mary
Katherine Latta, and Betty Daniel to join
500 others.
Betas Plan Stunt
Night
“TIic Beta Club will sponsor Stunt Night
November 30”, announces President Frank
Bullock. This event will include skits
from each of the high school homerooms
and activities.
New officers elected are Patsy Hughes,
vice-president; Mary Ann MeSwain, sec
retary; and Sallie Webb, treasurer.

Nov. 30
The grammar grades will present a
talent parade in assembly here Nov. 30.
Miss Lyon, one of the sixth-grade teachers,
is chairman of the program.
U. N. Theme At
Assembly
The Four Freedoms was the Assembly
theme during United Nations Week, spon
sored by Student Council.
Callie Frazier, Betty Lou Rawls, Rus
sell Barlowe, and Jo Anna Watkins spoke
on those freedoms. During the week the
bulletin board carried F>osters of U. N.
Week.
Mrs. Johnson Returns
Mrs. Don Johnson, Dr. House’s secretary
last year, returned to Oxford High School
Nov. 8 to xdsit friends.
She was sjjcnding a couple of days here
with her parents while her husband at
tended a principals’ meet in Greensboro.
He is principal of Mingo School near
Dunn, in Sampson county.
Big Pep Rally
Before Last Game
William Watkins starred in the season’s
longest, loudest, and lustiest pep rally in
As.sembly November 9, prior to the game
with Henderson here that night.
Watkins was assisted in leading some
surprise yells by several first-string players.
The band, directed by Mr. Swanger, played
several selections while the majorettes kept
step. Yells were led by varsity and J. V.
cheerleaders. J. V. squad with Coach
Parham and senior players were recognized.
‘^Special” Reporters For Owl
Even,- homeroom has been asked to name
a reporter for the Owl, in an effort to get
complete and representative coverage of
school news.

Take Merit Exam
Twelve seniors took the National Merit
e.xamination held here recently.
Johnny Welch, of last year’s graduating
class, won a scholarship last year. He is
at N. C. State this year.
This year’s group taking the test were
Beta Club members and Pierre Lcvcquc.
F. F. A. Wins
Second Place
The F. F. from Oxford High won
second place in the tool identification
contest held at Helena Nov. 6.
In the group were Billy Quick, Bobby
Huff, Vernard King, and Thurman Bur
nette.
Schools from Person and Granville
Counties were represented.
Miss Patsy Montague Guest
Speaker FTA Club Here
Miss Patsy Montague, of the State De
partment of Education, was guest speaker
at Assembly Nov. 16, under the auspices
of the Future Teachers Club here, named
Patsy Montague Club in honor of a former
teacher and a native of Oxford.
Miss Montague spoke as a feature of
National Education Week Nov. 11-17.
She was presented by Alice Currin, local
FT.A president.
Nov. 6 was not only Election Day. It
was also the eighty-seventh anniversary
of football in the United States.

Congratulations to Miss Averett’s and
Miss Smith’s rooms for the highest per
centage of P. T. Memberships.
Homecoming Dance
Attracts Over 200
.An estimated 225 students and alumni
attended the Homecoming Dance sponsored
by the Student Council here Friday even
ing Nov. 2, following the homecoming
game which Oxford lost 28-7 to Southern
of Durham.
The gym was decorated in a circus motif,
which consisted of animals hung along the
sides, trapeze artists suspended from the
ceiling, and clowns and clowns’ faces.
Helen .Adcock, Homecoming queen, was
escorted by Tommy Steagall. Her court
consisted of Mary Hall, maid of honor,
with Yen Burwell, Martha Taylor with
William Watkins, Anne White with Dan
.Averett, Jane Williams with Buddy Nor
wood, Polly Daniel with William Lytton,
Faye Morton with Fielding Walker, and
Lillian McFarland with John Hall. Pre
sentation of the Queen’s Court was the
highlight of the dance. The figure and
the dance were executed to the music of
“Autumn Leaves”.
.At the refreshment table, decorated as
a lemonade stand, lemonade, mints, cookies,
and potato chips were served.
Latin Club Meets
With President
The Latin Club met this month in the
home of Marsha and Bobby Ray, president
and vice-president, respectively.
John Webb, program chairman, present
ed Betty Lou Smith who gave a paper on
Greek Religion, and Bill Hicks, who gave
a report on “The Underworld”.
A Thanksgiving proclamation was read
in Latin and “We Gather Together to Ask
the Lord’s Blessing” was sung in Latin.
Open House Held in “Ag
Building

Open House was held November 1 in
the new agriculture building. Guests were
greeted by Russell Barlowe, F. F. .A. pre
sident, and Mr. Hill, sponsor.
F. F. .A. boys directed guests on a tour
of the building, including classrooms,
storage room, office, paint room, tool
room, and machineiy’ room. F. F. A.
scrapbook was also on display.
Juniors Raise
Money
The Juniors arc this year selling note-
paper and light bulbs, to raise money for
their class.
Anne White is president, and Misses
Averett and Bunn arc sponsors.
Fielding Walker Heads Sophs
Fielding Walker is president of the
Sophomore class.
Elouise Horner is vice-president, Mary
Helen Blackwell, secretary. Jack Overton,
treasurer, and Marsha Ray, historian. Mrs.
