C., November, 1959 The Juniors Mode $200 From Bulb Sole The juniors made approximately .1^200 on their annual light bulb sale, under the direction of Mr. Justin. This money will be used to entertain the Seniors at the Junior-Senior Prom next spring. District captains were Lea Lea Hall, Nancy Griffin, Donnie Hawks, John Cri- tcher, and Jenny L. 0‘Brian. Bill Hicks Heads Band Bill Hicks is president of the Band, S. G. Elliott is vice president, Caroline Vaught, secretary, and Arch Hicks trea surer. The band has appeared at four out-of- town football games, four home games, two pep rallies, and Band Day at Carolina on October 11. Several Christmas parades and a concert are on the roster for the month of Decem ber, announces Director Frank McCulloch. Majorettes Linda Currin, Kay Garner, and Claudia Currin are led by Caroline Vaught, head majorette. Serving as color guards are Linda Smith, Lynette Currin, Emilie Adcock, Diane Cox, and Catherine Duffy. Yearbook Pictures Are Completed Mr. Penny of the publishing company returned November 5-6 to photograph the clubs and other activities for the Oxonian, During October individual pictures were taken. For weeks now the bill-fold size Sfydei^f Couir^cil Works Oil Honor Code The Student Council is working on honor- code cards for the high school. The pro gram committee is working on movies, to be shown probably before Christmas and in February. The Student Council voted for Student of the Month from the following candi dates: Peggy Averett, Wiley Emmett, Harry Williams, Robert Powell, Anna Peed, Roy Dean, Ray Williford, and David Norris. A Thanksgiving program was sponsored by the Council Nov. 20. Shirley Tippett led the devotional, and the high school chorus, directed by Mr. Scoggins, sang “Thanks Be To God.” Annette Culbreth spoke on the “Origin of Thanksgiving” and Roy Dean on “Thanksgiving 1959”. A skit entitled “Thanksgiving Day is for Thanksgiving” was given by Billy Frazier, Mary Campbell, Nancy Plogan, Betty Howard, Joe Currin, Robert Powell, Jim my Frazier, and Annie Laura Dixon. Mr. Scoggins led the assembly group in three Thanksgiving songs. have been being exchanged. Dr. W. J. House Talks To Local A. A. U. W. Harrell Attends 4-H Congress Howard Harrell, president of the Oxford Senior 4-H Club, attended the 13th An nual N. C. 4-H Club Farm and Home Electric Congress in Asheville, October 29-30. The Congress was under the leadership of L. R. Harrill, State 4-H Leader. Other officers of the club are as follows: Richard Brooks, vice-president; Gussie Currin, secretary-treasurer; and Sylvia Clark, devotional chairman, F. H. A. Banquet Dec. 4 G.A.A. Places First Again in Annual Sfynf Night David Norris Student of Monfli David Norris, a Senior, was announced Student of the Month by Betty Lou Rawls in assembly November 13. “David, who has played football four years, and has played basketball part of the time, is an active member of the Mono gram Club, she explained. “David, a member of the Oxford Bap tist Church, exemplifies qualities of lea dership and good citizenship that recom mend him for this honor,” she added. His brother John and sister Victoria have graduated here. John is in the mili tary service after three years at the Uni versity. Victoria is now working in Ox ford, after two years at Mars Hill. He has a sister. Sue, in the ninth grade, and a brother Matt in the fourth grade. Girls’ Athletic Association again, as last year, won first prize ($10.00) in the an nual Stunt Night sponsored by the local chapter of The National Honor Society Friday night. Mrs. Satterwhite’s homeroom won sec ond prize ($7.50), and Mr. Scoggins’ High School Chorus won third ($5.00). In the talent division Diane Saunders won the prize of $5.00 for her ballet dance. In the winning stunt Bonnie Lou Currin and Julia Ruth Carrington starred in an “operatic” version of “La Prunia”. Emceeing for the whole program of 21 students were Julia Ruth Carrington, honor society president, and Ray Willi ford, senior class president. Judges were Mrs, B. F. Sloan, Mrs. James Dunn, and Mr. Hart Curl. Miss Eugenia Boyd is faculty sponsor of the honor society. This year stunts were given by the high school only. In previous years the nine Junior High grades on O.H.S. campus also participated, but it was decided by the honor society not to include the younger students in order to make me program shorter. Even so, the program, which started exactly on the dot at 8 o’clock, lasted until after 10:30. During intermission home-made candy and fountain cokes were on sale. This is the honor society’s money-mak ing project during the school year. 35 New Members In Latin Club Dr. W. J. House, former O.H.S. princi pal and now associate as superintendent in the Greensboro system, was guest speaker for the local chapter of A.A.U.W. Novem ber 23 in the main building at Oxford Orphanage. Dr. House talked on “Education in Rus sia and in the U.S.”. Mrs. House came with him. O.H.S. teachers who are members of A.A.U.W. are Miss Evelyn Breedlove, pre sident, Mrs. Mac Satterwhite, Miss Mattie Mae Lyon, Mrs. Tom Speed, Miss Mildred Bullock, and Miss Lois Waller. Several visitors were invited to hear Dr, House. After the program, he and Mrs. House were honored with an informal re ception with Orphanage A.A.U.W. mem bers as joint-hostesses. Mrs. Peggy Mann is to be guest speaker for the Mother-Daughter Banquet of the Future Homemakers of America to be held at the C, G. Credle School December 4. To Language Day at Woman's College Mrs. Satterwhite and four of her stu dents, Pat Leveque, Lea Lea Hall, Bar bara Rogers, and Brenda Gupton, attended Language Day at Woman’s College, Octo ber 29, The program included folk songs of various countries in their native languages, a report from natives of or visitors to foreign countries, skits related to several languages, and foreign movies. The hundred visitors at Language Day were guests of Woman’s College for lunch. The Latin Club welcomed 35 new mem bers into the club at the November meet ing. They follow: Marvin Averett, David Currin, Thomas Donegan, Paul Duffy, Ray Griffin, Henry Hall, Arch Hicks, Charles Peed, Royster Washington, Harry Watts, Dudley Williams, Richard Wyscozka. Tharsksgiying Recess School will recess for a long Thanksgiv ing weekend after classes end Wednesday. Christmas holidays are Dec. 23-Jan. 3, inclusive. Shirley Tippett D» A. R» Winner The Seniors voted Shirley Tippett as winner of the D.A.R. Citizenship award. For the award a senior girl is picked as exemplifying qualities of service, leader ship, and patriotism. The vote is taken by written ballot. Shirley was a member of the Bible Club as a Freshman. As a Sophomore she was a member of the Owl Staff, Latin Club, and Bible Club. As a Junior, Shirley was in the Bible Club, Owl Staff, Debating Club, for which she was treasurer. National Honor Society, and was a marshal. This year she is a member of the Bible Club, Circulation Manager for Owl staff, secretary of the Student Council, National Honor Society, marshal, treasurer of F.T.A., and a Class Night speaker. She is also a Senior superlative (most intellectual). Betty L. Rawls Heads Bus Drivers Elected officers of the Bus Drivers Club, are Betty Lou Rawls, president; Judith K. Currin, secretary-treasurer, and Bill Dickerson, reporter. The club tries to have a supper or some other social activity once a month. A bar- beque supper was held November 19, in Louisburg.
