PAGE FOUR THE LINCOLN ECHO APRIL, 1951 Let Us Have Faith By Helen Keller Reviewed by Mary Norwood Helen Keller, a deaf, dumb, and blind lecturer and writer is famous for her optimism as it is expressed in her. Let Us Have Faith. The theme of the book is tliis: For those of us who mou"n the wrecking of our civilization, whose blessings once sweet have turned into ashes because millions are in utter want of all things, and those of us who walk from day to day in the dark, l.here is a light of faith w^hich is ours to do with a; we will. In this non-fiction book, faith is shown in seven different ways. One, faith arms the soul b,v giv ing a more abundant life despite all obstacles and handicaps. Sec ondly, Faith can be acquired by developing an appreciation of nature. Thirdly, Faith arises in that when we are confronted with defeat, faith crepps in with un seen treasures, we know not from what source. Fourthly, Faith ro- gtniciaLci in that it gives new life to the soul. Fifthly, Faith fears not by opposing panic and re minding one that no ruler or state can give life or the self-govern ing culture which embodies us as free men and women. Sixthly, Faith is a responsibility in that we are responsible for the use of faith to get the beautiful things of life. And lastly, America, fie torchbearer of faith, places it in the forefront of its endeavors. This book was more interest ing than other books I have read recently, because of its timeli ness when the faith of the people of the world seems to be at at all-time low. Miss Keller has written for people in all walks of life to rekindle their faith and to engender a spirit of optimism. Miss Keller’s personal triumph in spite of physical handicaps should be marvelous testimony to the triumph of faith. P.T.A. Margaret Battle -Teachers- (Continued jrom page 2) to express himself. In rating a student, the teach ers should show no personal feel- : ings and should not be partial. The teacher should also consider the student’s attempts to answer even though the answer may be incorrect. In this way the timid student will be encouraged to keep on trying to make progress. Too, the students must have in- t_rest in learning and be as help ful as possible in preparing their - lessons to expect teachers to help them. They must realize that teachers can’t do .it all by them selves and a satisfactory grade just isn't given for being present in class. lola Baldwin HOLLYWOOD GRILL 411 'W. Franklin St. Chapel Hill, N.
