OCTOBER, 1952 THE LINCOLN ECHO PAGE THREE Sports Corner The Lincoln High Tigers open ed the season with Booker T. Washington High School of Rocky Mount, North Carolina and were defeated 13-0. The following week they were to play Warren County Training School of Wise, North Carolina. After making the trip the game was called off because the school had just opened. Lincoln was given the decision of the game 1-0. The following week the Tig ers took on the Hornets of Hill side. Here the Tigers were de feated 20-6. Due to the outbreak of polio the Tigers went on a three weeks’ vacation. The Tigers reopened the season by defeating the Horton High School of Pittsboro, North Caro lina, 13-0. The highlight of the Horton High and Lincoln game came during the closing seconds of the first half when Goins, with a quick opening in the cen ter of the line, raced five yards for the Tigers’ first touchdown. The second touchdown came in the fourth quarter with a pass from Goins to Clark. The members of the Lincoln High School football squad for 1952 are as follows: Johnny Goins, Captain; Nelson Riggsbee, Prince Taylor, Joe Parrish, Rob ert Parrish, Joe Caldwell, Cletus Clark, Benjamin Jones, Edward Foushee, Bobby Hagood, Benja min Baldwin, James Baldwin, Rufus Minor, Curtis Minor, Sam- py Atwater, Eugene Atwater, William Guthrie, Roosevelt John son, Rufus Bynum, Roscoe Jones, Lewis Scurlock, and Arnold Har ris. On Beautifying The School Grounds By Dorothy Weaver, '53 If each and every student of Lincoln High School would say, “I am going to make myself a committee of one to help beauti fy our school, and try to the best of my ability to get other stu dents to do the same”, the school and its surroundings would be well kept. If this were done, visitors and people passing by would see that Lincoln High School students love their school and work to preserve and beau tify it. There are many ways in which the students may keep the ground beautiful and add to its beauty. I The first way is to refrain from j throwing trash of all kinds on the ground by using the recept acles for trash. In the second place, they can refrain from mak ing paths across those places to be built up to improve the land scape and across the grass that is being developed. Finally, those who are able may make financial contributions to buy shrubbery to set out on the grounds. Any student who leaves a tree or shrub that he has given or his class has given leaves an expression of his regard for his school and forms a tie that will linger in his memory through the years. Booth and Guthrie Organize Science Club The 8A Science Club was or ganized September 15, 1952. The following officers were elected: President Willie Pendergraft Vice President .... Oscar Bynum Secretary Carolyn Burnett Assistant Secretary .... Lula Jones Treasurer .... Mrs. M. E. Kornegay Our motto for the year is, “Only the darkness brings out the stars.” Our aim is to find out all we can about Astronomy and other phases of science. Carolyn Burnette Review Of Assembly Programs The first assembly programs of the year have been presented by the ninth grades and the twelfth grade. The Ninth-B Class presented a program in the form of a movie about using the library. They presented a film entitled How to Use the Library. The Ninth-A Class presented a program about character build ing. The theme of the program was Keys to Character. Several members of the class presented such keys as Friendship, Cour tesy, and Trustworthiness. The Twelfth Grade Occupa tions class presented a very in teresting program entitled “How to Study." The Twelth Grade homeroom class was also respon sible for the United Nations Day program on October 24. Members of the class summarized much of the work of the United Na tions from its beginning to the present time. The New Ruling On Sports By Ross Farrington '53 The boys of Lincoln High School are somewhat upset over the new ruling in the revised regulations for the participation in interschool athletics. They feel that as long as a student is in school he should be able to play on his team. But State Laws require that no student who is 19 years of age before July 1, of the fiscal year may participate in interschool athletics. Too, interschool championship competition for boys and girls in grades one through eight is opposed by the new regulations. The reasons for these regula tions are two-fold: First, the high school regulation prevents boys and girls from coming to school chiefly for sports; and sec ondly, the regulation affecting the elementary pupils is to pre vent them from coming into high school with their major interest in sports. On Paving Of Merritt Mill Road By Faye Atwater It is a great help to the school and community to have the hard surface on Merritt Mill Road, a project begun the second week of school and completed the seventh week. However, the effect of this im provement on the pedestrian is not all good. It appears that the traffic on the road has greatly in creased, as well as the speed of the vehicles. This places a barrier ir the way of the pedestrian, as there is no sidewalk along this road, endangering the life of small children. This is especially true of children rushing to school in order not to be tardy. These regulations are especial ly good for Lincoln High School boys; for there have been too many examples of those who were in school regularly only during the season of football and basketball.
