Oxford Orphanage Drive Launched The Chapel Hill Chapter of The New Farmers of America has launched its annual drive for the benefit of the Oxford Orphanage. The drive began November 22, 1952, and will close on December 16. 1952. Grey cans for the collection of donations have been placed in a large number of local business places for the benefit of those Second Period Honor Roil Announced The following students made an average of B-plus or above for the second six weeks period. Annual Christmas Vespers Presented The annual Christmas program of the Lincoln High School chorus this year is to “The Eleventh grade: Betty Briggs, Ernestine Cole, Annie Mae Jones, Ernestine Powell. and Ruth Stroud. It will be held December 14, 1952 at 5 o’clock p.m. in the Northside Elementary Auditorium. The members will be dressed in colorful flowing Biolical costumes. Selections included in the can tata are “Silent Night”, “The The Echo staff dedicates the December issue to the Tubercu losis Control Program, by placing its chief emphasis upon the need of purchasing Christmas Seals by all the Citizens of Our Town. To secure knowledge at first be a Christmas hand concerning the needs of our Infant Jesus ’ town and community in the pro gram of controlling tuberculosis, several members of the staff visited the Health Department recently. The group was received pleasantly and given all available pamphlet material to be used in study at school in order to get information on the needs of our community to have it carried in to this worthy cause. The Oxford Orphanage Drive is one of the many civic activities carried on by the local N.F.A. chapter in their effort to develop leadership, improve local and | state conditions, and to bring; happiness to some one during the coming Christmas season. These children being the fatherless and , motherless offer a great chal- i lenge to the boys seeing that they | receive some of the things that all [ children look forward to at ; Christmas. This effort is a state ‘ wide one among N.F.A. members. Each member of the organiza tion has assumed the responsi bility of contributing at least $2.00 to the drive. The boy turn ing in the largest amount over his assumed responsibility will be given an all expense paid trip to the state N.F.A. convention in June at A & T College, Greens boro, N. C. The members of the chapter are making an appeal to you. Please make a personal contribu tion to this drive. Make checks payable to Oxford Colored Orphanage and mail to Box 415, I Chapel Hill, N. The group followed up their visit to the Health Department by inviting in for interview Mrs. Edith Brocker, Supervisor of Nurses, and Mr. Joseph H. Huff, Health Educator for the District Health Association, which in cludes the Chapel Hill area. During the interview, the stu dents learned many facts about the advances in the knowledge of tuberculosis and its control since 1914. Too, they were told much that the school and the commu nity can do to educate the public j on the matter of controlling : tuberculosis. What Our Town Needs To Defeat TB 1. X-ray Periodic physical examinations Tuberculin tests Fundamentals of good personal hygiene A better knowledge of nutrition Mock Election Held The 7th B class had a mock election to elect the president and vice president of the United States at the same time that citizens throughout America were voting. We registered two Mondays, October 20, and October 27. The pupils who were absent at the time we registered were not al lowed to vote on November 4. We elected the democratic parties, Adlai Stevenson and John Spark man for the president and vice president. We are sorry that our candidates did not win in the real election. Jessie R.
