THE GRIER SCRIPT
NOVEMBER 20, 1968
SPORTS EDITORIAL
Our Grier Knights have started
the season off with a bang! They
have won 4 games and lost only
one!
Defense on our team has im
proved game after game. In the
Arhngton game, our pass defense
was rather weak. Both Arhngton’s
touchdowns were scored off of long
passes. After working on pass de
fense at practice, Grier played
Shelby. Pass defense improved a bit
but our pursuit on Shelby’s wide
plays was off.
The next game showed Grier’s
will to win. Our Knights held Huss
to no score. They also kept Huss
from having long possesion with
the ball. The next game with Wray
turned out like the Huss game.
Our defense held Wray to no score
and gave our offense a chance to
run many fine plays.
Recently Grier played with a
much tougher team, Belmont. Even
though Belmont supposedly has a
good team, our Kni^ts held them
only 6 points. That touchdown was
scored on a 40 yard pass. Our
defensive squad has held opposing
teams to only 31 points in 5 games.
Outstanding players on defense
have been Mike Spurrier, Joe Rice,
Charlie Owens, and Michael Davis.
We can’t forget out offense. The
head of our offensive team is the
quarter back. Hugh Giles. He has
been on target with his passing and
has run many fine plays himself.
Our big fullback, Mike Worsham,
has begun to run hard. Steve Parish
started off the season good. He
has set up many touchdowns and
run a couple himself. Ricky CorreU
is also adding yards to his name. He
has run many touchdowns. CorreU
has also been doing a fine job at
kicking Grier’s extra points.
The line is also an important part
of our team. The starting lineup has
changed and rechanged. They have
been weak at times but have come
around rapidly to a strong team.
With these odds on our side, how
can we lose! Let’s hope our Knights
will keep up the good work and win
their next games. Let’s go
KNIGHTS!!
GRIER CHAINS BULLDOGS!
20-12
On September 18, 1968, Grier’s
Knights defeated the Arlington BuU-
dogs in a close, hard-fought battle.
The game opened with Arling
ton’s kick-off. Steve Parish returned
the ball 20 yards. The Knights drove
to the 10 yard line but were stopped
by the BuUdogs. The Bulldogs then
completed a pass to Marvin Glenn
for an Arlington T. D. The extra
point was no good. The next kick
went to Mike Henderson, who re
turned ti 10 yards. Then after
driving the field, CorreU scored. He
also kicked the point. The half then
ended with another touchdown pass
to Glenn and the score was 12-7.
Knights kicked-off to Marvin
Glenn who returned ti 15 yards.
After driving to the 20, Mike Spurrier
batted a pass enabling Eric Sanders
to intercept. Grier drove to the 10
where Hugh Giles passed to Horne
for a T. D. CorreU’s kick was good.
Next kick-off went to Marvin
Glenn, After a desperate drive, they
were forced to punt. The punt
rolled out of bounds. A 30 yard
run by Parish set up ConeU’s 40
yard run for a T. D. CorreU’s kick
missed. The Knights held the BuU
dogs scoreless with the help of Mike
Henderson’s interception. The game
ended 20-12.
END SWEEP DEFEATS
GRIER
The toss was won by Grier and
we chose to receive. Worsham got
the kick and returned it 10 yards.
We were held steady by Shelby and
had to punt. After a long drive,
Shelby made a pitch out to Hoskins
who made the touchdown. The
extra point failed.
Shelby’s kick roUed into the
enzone. The ball was then placed
on the 20 yard line. After a penalty,
the end of the first quarter was
third down and on the fifteen yard
line.
We punted and Shelby made
another drive. A play called the
“flea-flicker” (which is a pass and a
pitchback) enabled Shelby to score.
The extra point was good and it was
13-0.
The kick-off went to Horne who
returned it 20 yards. After driving
almost to a touchdown, the half
ended Shelby 13, Grier 0.
We kicked off. Randy Adams
tackled the player on the second
yard Une. After the third quarter,
Shelby still had the ball. Finally,
Shelby had to punt. After a pass
from GUes to Horne, we moved
twenty yards. Another pass to
Henderson for fifteen yards. Then a
twenty-yards-to-go play. A bomb
was thrown to Parrish for the
touchdown. The point was good
and the score was 13-7. We
attempted an outside kick, but
failed, Shelby ran out the clock
and the game ended Shelby 13,
Grier 7.
GRIER DEFEATS HUSS
After a fine kick and a fast
tackle by Randy Adams, the Huskies
took the baU on their twenty. Our
tight defense held them to punt.
Steve Parish returned the baU five
yards. After a fine drive, we were
forced to punt. They were held
again by our improving defense.
Our offense took the ball on their
twenty-five. Then switching sides
for the quarter we ran a few plays
and Worsham carried the ball over
for the score. The extra point
attempt was blocked and Grier took
the lead at six to nothing. The half
ended with us close to another score.
The second half opened with
the kick from Huss. Parish carried
the ball to our forty-five. From
there, we carried the baU to the
scoring range. CorreU carried the
ball over for another six points. The
extra point was missed. This left
Grier with a victory over Huss
twelve to nothing.
GRIER STOMPS MUSTANGS
The game opened with the kick
off to CorreU, who returned the
ball a good thirty yards. After a
rugged drive, we were forced to
punt. Our defense held them and
Francum returned the punt for ten
yards. A twenty yard pass to Parish
put the baU on their five yard line.
After four downs and a loss of two
the Mustangs took the ball on their
own seven yard line. They were
forced to punt by our hard-fighting
defense. Parish returned the punt
ten yards, and CorreU carried the
ball in for the touchdown. Then he
kicked the extra point. The half
ended 6-0.
After the kick to Wray, a fumble
set up Parish’s five yard touchdown
run. After a thirty yard touchdown
pass to Henderson, an inside kick
set up a thirty yard touchdown run
for Parish. We held them scoreless.
The game ended 26-0, in Grier’s
favor.

J. V.’S 1 FOR 1
Our J. V.’s started the season
off by a loss to Shelby. The J. V.’s
refraised their position by easUy
rolling over Wray’s J. V.’s.
In the Shelby game, our J. V.’s
were out-fought by the bigger
Shelby team. The game opened with
a quick score by Shelby. The rest
of the quarter remained scoreless
for both teams. In the second
quarter, Shelby scored another T.D.
which ended the half - Shelby 13,
Grier 0.
Again in the third quarter, Shelby
scored. The extra point was good
and the third quarter ended 20-0.
The J. V.’s played better in the
fourth and held Shelby to 2 first
downs and no score.
The game ended with Shelby
20 Grier 0.
The second J. V. game was with
Wray. The first quarter remained
scoreless for both teams. Grier kept
the baU most of the second quarter.
Early in the second Grier scored.
The extra point was good. The
rest of the second remained with
the baU switching hands. The half
ended Grier 7 - Wray 0.
The third quarter opened with
another touchdown to Grier. The
point was good, and it was Grier
14 - Wray 0. The third and fourth
quarters left Wray baffled with our
J. V.’s lightning speed.
The game ended with a victory
for Grier. The winning score was
Grier 14 - Wray 0.
GRIER WINS THIRD
STRAIGHT
We took the opening kick-off
and marched sixty-five yards for
the T. D. scored by, Mike Worsham
from the one yard line. CorreU’s
extra point attempt was good. A
WUdcat fumble and a twenty yard
run by Hugh Giles set up Worsham’s
second T. D., this one also from the
one yard line.
A Grier fumble on the fourth
down set up Belmont’s only score.
It was made on the forty yard pass
play. The half ended 13-0.
Our great defense held the WUd-
cats scoreless in the second half.
CorreU scored on the fourth quarter
on a twenty run making the score
19-6. So ended the game.
