GRIER SLASHED BY
SHELBY
Our Grier Varsity lost to Shelby,
in a game played at Shelby, by a
score of tfiirty-seven to twenty-
eight. Shelby had an edge at the
end of the first half of seventeen
to fourteen. The Grier attack was
based mainly on foul shots. They
hit forty-three percent of their
foul shots, which totaled sixteen
of their total points. They shot
twenty-eight percent from the
floor which tallied the rest of
their points. The leading scorer
was Rice with twelve, followed by
Giles with eight, Henderson with
three. Page and Watson with two,
and Harris with one. Grier played
a good game, but as they say,
“there is always room for im
provement.”
JUNIOR VARSITY DUNKED
BY SHELBY
The junior Varsity was out-
shot and out-rebounded by
Shelby’s Junior Varsity, in a game
played at Shelby on Monday,
January 6th. It seems they couldn’t
get the New Year started off
right. They lost by a ripping score
of forty-two to thirty-one. The
game was fast and loose, but lost
to rebounding. The Junior Varsity
never led in the game and were
down in the first half twenty-three
to eighteen. The game showed
Grier’s Junior Varsity hitting 39%
of their field goals while their
opponents hit 58%. They were
36% from the foul line, while
their opponents hit a high of 54%.
The high scorer was Randy Queen
with twelve, followed by Berryman
with nine, Mark Queen and Mike
Tate both with four, and Donald
Howard with two.
ARLINGTON SLIDES PAST
GRIER
Grier fought long and hard,
but lost by one point to the
Arlington Bulldogs. Marvin Glenn
(Hawkeye) scored the winning shot
for the Bulldogs by a shot from
the corner.
At the end of a fast and
furious first half, the score was
tied up twenty to twenty.
The last fifteen seconds were
crucial as it was Arlington’s ball
and a lead of thirty-eight to thirty-
seven. Bringing the ball down
court while trying to stall on
Arlington, a player was tied up
with the ball. The jump was tapped
to Grier, but the shot failed, and
left Arlington victorious. Grier’s
points were tallied up by Giles-
thirteen, Rice-seven, Queen and
Qwens-six, Henderson-three, and
Watson-two.
It is felt that this game was
lost to fouls. Grier out-scored
Arlington from the floor in the
second half, hitting fourteen, and
Arlington hitting twelve. Grier gave
Arlington the win by Arlington
hitting she foul shots and Grier
hitting only three. Maybe this
close call will provide the right
spirit with which to win.
GRIER’S JUNIOR VARSITY
RIPS ARLINGTON
The Grier Junior Varsity
answered our call by beating
Arlington thirty-six to twenty-six.
The little Knights jumped ahead
early in the first quarter and
held it all the way through.
The Junior Varsity played both
halves of the game with every
effort. They ended the game with
thirty from the floor, while
Arlington had only sixteen.
The high scorer for Grier was
Queen with eleven. He was
followed by Howard-nine, Berry
man-eight, Tate-five, MeSpadden-
two, and Gibbs-one. We are all
hoping they will go through the
rest of the season undefeated.
HUSS DEFEATS GRIER
Hunter Huss kept their un
defeated record as they slid by the
Grier Knights. Grier’s record
slumped to zero and five putting
them in last place.
The game started out bad for
the Knights. At half-time, the
score was twenty-one to sixteen,
in favor of Huss. The rest of the
game was played poorly by Grier
and the game ended fifty-one to
thirty in favor of the Huskies.
Grier turned the ball over nine
teen times while Huss’s amounted
to a low eight. The Knights were
very cold from the foul-line, hitting
only four of fifteen tries. The
Huskies hit eleven of their sixteen
free throws. Huss out-rebounded
Grier by one (thirty-six to thirty-
five). Grier hit thirteen of their
fifty-one shots from the floor,
whUe Huss got twenty out of
sixty-four. The scorers for Grier
were Randy Queen and Hugh
Giles with seven each. Rice with
six, Owens with four, Watson
with three, Henderson with two,
and Stebbins with one. The leading
scorer for Huss was Hopper with
sixteen points.
JUNIOR VARSITY
CAPTURES VICTORY OVER
GASTON DAY
Grier’s Junior Varisty fought
hard and overcame Gaston Day by
a score of forty-nine to thirty.
Even our rebounding was good,
as were the plays they used, which
baffled Gaston Day’s zone defense.
They also did a fine job holding
Gaston Day’s high scorer to low
points. Our team held an edge at
half time of twenty-seven to
twenty-one. The Junior Varsity
did even a better job in the
second half as they went on to
score Gaston Day twenty-one to
nine.
High scorers were Queen and
Howard, both with eleven, Berry
man with ten, Tate with six,
Gibbs with five, and Morris and
Davis, each with three.
BASKETBALL WRAP-UP
Grier’s Varsity started off wrong
as they lost the first five games of
the season. Suddenly, out of the
blue, Grier beat Belmont. This
sprouted a whole new season.
Even though they lost their next
game to Highland, Grier then
pulled victories over Wray, Cherry-
ville, and Shelby.
After Grier’s victory over
Belmont, Grier’s record improved
greatly. Before the Belmont game,
Grier averaged only 30.8 points
per game, 28% on field goals,
and 36% on free throws. After
the Belmont game, the Varsity
averaged 35 points, and 34% on
field goals, and 58% on free throws.
Giles took top honors in scoring,
as he totalled up a hundred and
eighty-nine points. Giles was
followed by Randy Queen, who
scored thirty-seven for the Junior
Varsity in three games, and eighty-
five for the Varsity in eleven games.
Rice, third with seventy-four,
Owens fifty-four, Watson twenty-
six, Parish twenty-three, Hender
son seventeen. Page eleven, Ledford
four, Harris three, Todd Stebbins
one. All and all, Grier had a fine
season with their great comeback.
For the Junior Varsity, Berry
man was high, scoring ninety-
eight, followed by Howard with
eighty-three, Tate forty-seven,
Davis forty-six, Mark Queen fifty-
two, Gibbs twenty-three, Tolbert
and Morris with ten, Harris nine.
Barber six, MeSpadden five, and
Cooke four.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
TEAM
Grier’s recently organized
Basketball team, consisting of ninth
grade girls has become quite
successful in their efforts to in
crease student involvement. With
the help and counseling of Mr.
Rigdon and Mrs. Jenkins, these
girls have strived to improve their
athletic ability and have had very
pleasing results. Thus far, the girls
have traveled to different schools
and played games very well which
have proved their interest in the
athletic world. Not only have they
practiced and become more
familiar with the fundamentals of
basketball, but they have also
learned the true value of sports
manship and how to put it to
good use before, during, and after
the games.
