PAGE 2 THE GRIER SCRIPT DECEMBER, 1969 WHAT IS CHRISTMAS? Christmas is love, giving, sharing, and the spirit of giving rather than receiving. What have you given for Christmas? I’m certain almost everyone has given a present to someone. The present was your symbol of love or friendship with someone - ■ but, have you given of yourself, your time, and your efforts? Have you helped make someone’s cold winter just a little warmer filled with a ray of hope? From personal experience, I must say that it is the most satisfying thing you can do. Last year the Rotary Club of Gastonia provided local children with a Christmas. Two particular men were responsible for four children - two boys and two girls - all brothers and sisters. The men were to buy clothes, shoes, and some toys for the children. They were to use their own money out of their own pockets to pay for these articles. Those children were so delighted with their gifts! You see, their mother said that it was the first real Christmas her children had ever had. Can you imagine waking up on Christmas morning with nothing under the tree? Even if there was nothing material, would there be love for other people in your home? That is what really counts at Christmas... love. If you think you don’t have much, just remember that somewhere on this earth, there are others who have much less and are perhaps hungry and cold. Someone in Russia may have more material goods than any number of famiUes in America, but look what they’re paying for it — They’re paying for it with precious freedom! They don’t have the freedom to vote, to speak their minds, or when accused of a crime, to be tried by a jury with an impartial mind. We in the United States had better beware of the communism that is slowly seeping into our beautiful land of freedom or it will be a land of freedom never again. This is up to you and me. We make up tomorrow’s leaders, tomorrow’s voters. We all want to be treated equally, but not to be ruled completely by our government. Our freedom is precious. All of our people are precious to our country. How do you treat something that is precious to you? You hold onto it and care for it. So care for our underprivileged. Put a quarter in the Salvation Army Christmas pot. It cares for someone’s needs. It shows them that there is love in our land. See how good it makesiyou feel! As long as Christmas comes, there will always be love, for Christmas is love! CHRISTMAS DAY Christmas is a day of receiving and giving. Christmas is a way of joyful living.
