Fall 1995 Special Edition
In 1964 Bobby Anderson began
working with the North Carolina
Cominunity College System (formerly North
Carolina Department of Community
Colleges) in Raleigh as Vocational
Education Supervisor with the Curriculum
Laboratory. His primary responsibility
was the development of general education
courses in support of vocational and
technical curricula. He was also
involved in the initial development of
business education progrcims.
Bobby received his Bachelor of
Science degree and Masters degree in
Education and Business from East
Carolina University. Barton College
(formerly Atlantic Christian College)
employed him as an Assistant Professor.
While in this position, he became
involved with Wilson Technical Community
College (formerly Wilson Industrial
Education Center) cind the president
then, Salvatore DelMastro. This
relationship soon led to Mr. DelMastro's
recommendation that Bobby be hired as a
Curriculum Specialist with the System Office in Raleigh.
Bobby was instrumental in coordinating the development of a series of general
education courses in support of the occupational programs and a general education
curriculum that ultimately became the college transfer program that is now offered
by the community colleges. The technical institutes offered a similar two-year
general education program under contract with the four-year colleges and
universities in North Carolina and surrounding states. Bobby's efforts resulted in
providing a much more comprehensive program of training and education for all
students enrolled in the North Carolina Community College System. This was a major
breakthrough and truly fulfilled the objective of providing a comprehensive program
of instruction for all the community college students, whatever their goal or the
name of the institution they attended.
Representing the Community College system, he assisted in the development of
programs of instruction in concert with The University of North Carolina and the
private business schools operating in NC. It was not an easy task and required a
great deal of patience and determination. Much of what is available in our present
system of institutions is the result of the dedication and perseverance of Bobby
Anderson, a truly professional individual who dedicated all his efforts to insure
that each of our students would have the opportunity to fulfill their dreams and
aspirations.
Bobby contributed to the development of many current offerings in the Community
College System. He left his mark on the college transfer program, general education
and special programs, occupational programs, and many continuing education programs.
He participated with local staff members in securing the delivery of quality
programs of instruction.
The North Carolina Community College System owes a great deal to Bobby
Anderson. Speaking for the many students who have graduated or are presently
enrolled in a program provided by one of our comprehensive institutions, we "Thank
you, Bobby, for your dedication and efforts on our behalf."
