The Messenger Volume 1 High Point, North Carolina, Monday, September 30, 1946 No. 1 New Improvements To Be Made After four war years daring which little could be done, plans are now under way for making many needed improvements throughout the plant. Foremost on the list is the re painting of every department. An engineer has inspected the entire mill and has recommended the ap plication of Color Dynamics throughout. In reality. Color Dy-' namics is based on principles di rectly opposed to camouflage practices. To camouflage an ob ject, color is used to hide and ob scure; in Color Dynamics, color is used to highlight, reveal and em phasize. In addition to brightening things up with paint, the present lightinr system is to be revamped. Con tinuous lines of fluorescent light will be put in the knitting and looping departments, and the pres ent lights upstairs will be distrib uted over other parts of the mill. New fixtures have been placed in the rest rooms, and new wash fountains have already been or dered to replace the present sinks. Each department will have their own semi-circular, foot treadle operated wash fountain, which will help relieve the present congestion at the end of working hours. As we all know, the mill gets rather warm in the summer. To correct this, a sprinkler system, guaranteed to reduce the heat from eight to twelve degrees, has al ready been placed on the roof of the main building and will also be placed on the boarding room and dye house when the re-roofing of this building is completed. Last, but not least, we are go ing to have music while we work. A plant broadcaster has arrived and is to be installed, we hope, within the next two weeks. When this system is in operation, a sur vey will be run periodically to determine what type of music and recordings are preferred through out the plant. With these new impovements, and others which we plan to add later, we will be well on the way to making Harriss and Covington a more modem and up-to-date milL Steaming Off Solves Cleaning Problem Pictured above are Grady Wilson, Paul Norman, Nolan Mullis, and Carrl Whitt steaming off one of our knitting machines. Some method of giving a machine a thorough cleaning has lone been nn« of our problems. This idea, recently originated by Grady and Paul, of shooting the machine with live steam has finally solved this problem. The dirt, grease, and lint which are usually hard to off, now are easily removed. Thanks to Grady and Paul, our machines now look like new nffo,. steam bath. » “The Winnah!” Out of some seventy suggested titles submitted, the title found most appropriate for our mill paper was THE MES SENGER. Congratulations to Mrs. Lillie Hendrix of the Inspecting Department for naming our paper and winning the $5.00 award. Community Chest Drive The campaign date for the an nual Community Chest Drive is October 7th to October 17th. Each employee will be asked for four hours’ pay. We are all proud that Harriss and Covington was the first plant in town to meet their quota in the Y. M. C. A. Drive, and we hope that we can keep up our excellent record in this equally as worthy cause.
