GTE Mobile of 1100 Perimeter Park, Morrisville, had sulanilted a plan fcff a 185-foot cellular commu- nicatiOT tower known as Cellular One Tower to be located on a 60- by-40-foot piece of property it had leased for the project about 500 feet off Airport Boulevard and at the rear of a strip shoiping center. Town Planner Leisa Powell told ccHnmissioners on April 9 that the developer had received a special use permit from the board of ad justment, with requirements te ap proval condition^ upon receiving written ^tproval by the FAA of the tower’s location. Representatives of KCI Tech nologies Inc. of Raleigh, appearing on behalf of GTE Mobile, present ed a copy of such approval, but board members noted concern over the size of the tower and the size of the proper^ upon which it was to be erected. Commissioner Billy Sauls equated the 185 foot-high tower to an 18-story building. Com missioner C.T. Moore commented: "I can’t put a satellite dish in my yard.” To which Mayor Margaret Broadwell noted: "You’re not poviding services to others." The commissioners expressed an other concern: that die developer should have enough popaty to ccxitain the pole should it fall and a small building to bold tele^dione equipment. Sauls also cited ap pearance, saying he would want the area fenced and a slatted covering around the base at all sides. Cost of such a structure and equipnent was placed in the range of $500,000 to $750,000 for the tower and a small building to bold ^e]Aone equipnent. When mem bers questioned the amount of tax on such a building and structure, they were told by Town Manager David I^odgkins the m^or cost was for the equipment inside and that such equipment was considered as furnishings would be in a house. and that taxes are not paid on fur nishings. The commissioners, who had held over the Cellular One Tower plan from the April 9 meeting, tabled it a second time on April 22, this time for 30 days, at which time staff study will continue. Among the new information the town has received is a summary of Durham’s standards for communications towers. Commissioners decided to study those standards with the thought of incorporating such stan dards in the town zoning code. A secraid tower site plan sub mitted by Bell South on April 9 also has beat tabled. This was for a 125-foot cellular communication tower at the rear of die William Poe building on Morrisville Paricway. It also was to be built on a leased area of about 2,259 square feet. Com missioner Mark Silver-Smith im mediately moved to table the plan. The motion was seconded by Moore. Please Recycle The largest component of trash in landfills is NEWSPAPERS • 14% by volume. .
