12 - The Morrisville and Preston Progress, Wednesday, May 29,1996 NCDOT improvements scheduled A number of projects by the North Carolina Department of Transport^OT in or about Morris- ville are either on the drawing boards or ready to start In a memcamidum to Town Man ager David Hodgkins, Community Development Director Mike Allway listed the department’s transportation improvement pro grams, which include roadway widenings, railroad crossing warn ing devices and extension of road ways that now end in dead-ends. Plx)jects cited include: • The extension of Cary Parkway north of High House Road to N.C. 54. Construction of this multi-lane facility will cover about a 1.2-mile stretch of roadway and will cost about $6 million. It is scheduled for ccanpletion by 1999. • Widening of Aviation Parkway for about 2.6 miles from N.C. 54 to 1-40 at a cost of abcait $4.6 million. Planning is scheduled to start in 1999 and construction is expected to be completed by 2002. • Realignment of Morrisville- Carpenter Road crossing at Norfolk Southern Railway and N.C. 54 to meet Aviation Parkway. Automatic warning devices and traffic hghts, including left-turn lights, will be in stalled. N.C. 54 will be elevated as it approaches the new intersection. This project includes the closure of the Ashe Street crossing at N.C. 54. Cost of the project is $1.3 million. It is scheduled to start this summer with completion by end of year. • Also scheduled for this year is the installation of automatic warn ing devices at railroad crossing at Barbee Road at a cost of $75,000. • Widening of Airport Boulevard to five lanes from N.C. 54 to 1-40 at a cost of $3.5 million. Phase One construction is scheduled to be CMnpIeted by 1997 and Phase Two by 2002. • Revising automatic warning devices on Morrisville Parkway at Norfolk Southern Railroad crossing this year at a cost of $75,000. • Development of the Northern Wake Expressway from N.C. 55 West of Morrisville to U.S. 64 East near Knightdale. This is the Outer Loop and will be a four-lane divided highway about 29 miles long. The cost is approximately $488 milhon. Currently under con struction, it is expected to be com pleted by 2002. • Widening the roadway to eight lanes cm N.C. 147 (Exit 279) in Re search Triangle Park to Bradshaw Freeway at Wade Avenue (Exit 289). The project is about 9.4 miles, with the cost placed at $51 million. This 1-40 project has been identified as a future need and is not yet scheduled. Allway also said the following projects have been requested by the town to be included in the Depart ment of Transportation projects from 1997-2003. • Constructing McCrimmon Park way from N.C. 54 to west of Air port Boulevard. Allway noted that Lichtin Properties has verbally agreed to provide for planning, de sign and right-of-way. • Planning and design of McCrimmon Parkway from Evans Road at Aviation Parkway to Air- peat Boulevard. • Widening Aviation Parkway be tween N.C. 54 and 1-40 to a multi lane facility. Developer has plans for 353 homes in Durham Continued from page 10 Omer Ferrell of Morrisville plans to develop a 353-home sub division in Durham that will be marketed by Raleigh-based Cold- well Banker Wythe Properties. Stone Hill Estates will be devel oped on 118 acres that Ferrell has owned for 25 years. The land is lo cated off N.C. 98 ai Mineral Springs Road. Eunice Robertson, new homes specialist for Coldwell Banker Wythe, said custom builders will offer 15 to 20 house plans with prices ranging from $95,000 to $130,000. The first phase will in clude 36 home sites with curbing and sidewalks on through streets.
