The Morilsvilte and Preston Progress, Thursday, December 19,1996 - 3 Town board votes to buy snow plow A proposal to contract out snow lemovai was denied by tbe Mcrris- vUle Town Board at its Nov. 25 □meeting. Instead, ctKonmissioners voted 3-1 to spend sp to $5,000 to buy a blade that would be attached K) die front of a dump truck. The town staff had solicited proposals for snow and ice removal firom streets and public paiking lots. And commissioners, at the meeting, were presented with a bid from a local company to do the worit, when called upon, for $120 an hour. But the board, led by a motion from Commissioner C.T. Moore, chose to buy the plow. "We figured out what it would have cost us to contract out the work last year and we came up with mega-lMicks," Moore said. He said most of Monisville’s roads are state-maintained and therefore plowed by DOT. Moore said he felt the town needed to do its own removal on town streets and othCT town-owned property, thus the reason behind buying a plow. Commissioner Mark Silver smith, who was absent from the meeting, said later he felt the town needed both the contraa for service and the plow. "If we have another winter like the last one, we will need more trucks," he said. "Even though most of our streets are state-maintained, we learned last year that DOT doesn’t crane around." SUver-Smith said he thought the bid was reasonable. "If the work costs $1,000 or even $1,500 that’s not too much to pay to get the roads cleaned up to keep the business cranmunity going," be said. Silver-Smith pointed out that businesses make up a large part of the town’s tax base and so should be a prime consideration. But Moore said last winter’s storms were unusual. "That amount of snow and ice comes around once every five, six, seven years." Town Manager David Hogkins said the F^iblic Works Department has available one ton of salt for use on walkways and other areas and 28 tons of screenings (coarse sand) fra* use on streets and other areas. In a m^o to commissioners, he added that all vehicles and equip ment related to winter response would be checked to ensure that all are in good mechanical condition and ready in case of an emergency. A GIFT-Artist Jerry Miller presented the Town of Morrisville with a pen and ink drawing earlier this month of the town hall. Town Clerk Evelyn Lumley said the framed original will hang in the administrative offices for now until a permanent place for it can be found. New equipment a hit at town parks Town board awards bids for police station Continued from page 1 Last January, Silver-Smith said the town should consider combin ing the fire station and police de partment into one. Last week he said he felt building a fire station was more important than a police station. Since 1989, the police department has used the 1,100-square-foot building at the end of Page Street Police Chief Bruce Newnam has said his 17 officers need more work space inside and room outside to iwk. A site plan, designed by Smith Associates, wiD put the station to the right of town hall and give it a similar style and theme. A side entry to the building will have a 900-square-foot canopy. Little Jaeger Goepfert and Dani Fulmer couldn’t get enough of the new Super Dome climbing ^para- tus at Lumley Park in Morrisville Thursday afternoon. As they ran to catch up to their mothers, who were urging them that it was time to go home, the yellow oval tube slide beckoned the preschoolers for just one thrill. And the colorful spring-based animals were just too irresistible to pass up; just one mwe ride. The new equipment at Lumley Park, which also includes an eight- seat swing, junior whirl merry-go- round and a Pike’s Peak climbing structure, got rave reviews from Sherry Fulmer of Cary. "We’ve been trying to leave for the past two hours," she said of her future and we don’t have one," he child’s determination to stay said. longer. She and a friend from Fuquay-Varina had spent most of the afternoon there. Kim Resnick, who used to live in the Huntington town homes next door, was enjoying the swings with her daughter Olivia. "This is great, something the town really needed,” she said. The Town of Morrisville installed the new equipment earlier this month from a $12,690 appropria tion in the current fisc^ year’s budget. Loads of beach sand in the play area make the landings a little easier when Che little ones fall. The Ruritan Park and the park at Shiloh also got some equipment, a junior whirl merry-go-round at each. "I think it made a nice addition," Parks and Recreation Director Alan Carroll said.
