ATHLETIC DAI
On Wednesday, May 6, Smithfi eld
School held its annual Athletic
Day program. As usual, our spirited
cheerleaders started things off vd-th ?’
"bang" by leading the students in
several cheers.
Robert Myrick presided and extended
a cordial welcome to all.
The program began with Terry Knott
narrating as the girls’ basketball team
did a marvelous job of showing how girls
at SHS gain poise when they join the
basketball team.
Next, ELlen Daughtry related the
experiences of her first date at a loot-
ball game. It seems that her boyfriend,
Harry, did a T^Dnderful job of teaching
her the "correct" rules of the game,
Laura Lynn Laughter, Evelyn Howell,
and Andrea Lee paid tribute to some of
tte teachers with their version of "We
Love You Beot-les,"
I guess "Beotle-Itis" must be con
tagious, even to a losing basketball
team. At least, that is the way it
sounded. Robert Myiick managed to cheer
up the disheartened team, Wingate Lassi
ter, Van Denning, Joe -^ansinger, and
Millard Stallings, by getting them to
■ join him in such songs as "I Wanna Dunk
the Ball".
The highlight of the program was
a revealing skit of what it’s really
like in Coach Browh’s classes, George
Faulk, of course, played the part of
Coach Brown.
Last oiS the program, but certainly
not least, was a sneak preview of next
year’s football team. Because of a lack
of "man power" the girls’ basketball
team decided to come to the rescue,
Judging by that pass thrown to Coach
Pajrne, Smithfield should go all the way
next year.
The Athletic Awards were presented
next to Coaches Brown, Temple, and
Payne. Cheryl Kistler and Lindsay Park
Were chosen as the mosst outstanding
girl athletes. Robert Myrick and Eric
Pnown were selected as the most outstand
ing male athletes. The recipiait of the
lommy Gamder Sportsmanship Award was
Robert Myrick, Ihis was presented to him
by Principal A, G* GLenn,
Finally the long awaited moment
Cane vhen Coach Brown introduced the
tearful, but happy, new cheerleaders.
Helping to boast the school spirit next
year will be Candy Baker, Pam Batten,
Idbby Man gum, and Becky Wright.
