Well, it parked itself in the gym for our Homecoming Dance I The circus scene was complete with fat ladies, clowns, balloons, and even a baby elephant. Did Mrs, Adams, Mrs. Barbour, and the hardworking art crew have anything to do with it? Jon Isley was the master of ceremonies. He announced the Home coming Court as they ascended the gym stairs and walked out on the floor. Candy Baker, the Homecoming Queen, gave a short speech of thanks to the football team. Then the senior players presented Coach Brown the ball that won the Selma game, complete with autographs. Our swinging combo, direct from Goldsboro, was The Dimensions. Those boya really put out a great sound to watusi to. Did anyone know that the drummer is Mrs. Snipes* cousin? While the action was going on inside, rumor had it that a certain teacher was being handcuffed and arrested by the local po3j.ce ! I! I*m sure that everyone had a fabulous time. I*m sure they join me in thanking all the hard-working teachers "vdio put much time and effort in making this dance a success. We owe them a great debt of thanks. Mary Sanders HUNTER JOHNSON MUSIC CLUB SETS FORTH PLANS FOR THE YEAR At the first meeting of the Hunter Johnson Misic Club, the following officers were elected: Joan Shallcross, President; Ginger Daughtry, Vice- President; Ann Sloan, Secretary- Treasurer, The following appointed positions were announced at the second meeting; Program Chairmen, Billy Oliver and Donna Burgess.; Publicity Chairman, Gloria Little; Membership Chairman, Margy Lee; and Assisting Student Counselor, Craig Barbour, The club voted to contribute to the Smithfield Public Library a second copy of the book, much in de mand, ;nie Trapp Family Singers, At each meeting, there will be a miscellaneous part of the programs in which members and guests will perform music from all classes. At the end of each program the American musical theater will be discussed. We are taking this as a project this year in order to understand Americans ■ second contribution to the world of literature, the musical play. (The first naturally being the short story.) During the second meeting, Billy Oliver, who is directing this study, gave a talk on the evolution of the American musical play and showed how Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II have shaped the form of the musical theater into a significant cultural achievement. In the following months, several plays will be dis cussed, with emphasis on Rodgers and Hammerstein, At one meeting, we plan to in vite Dr. Hunter Johnson, for whom the club is named, to visit with us.
