After three decades
In 1937 the first issue of the Smithfield High Times came off the presses
containing between its covers essentially the same type of material that it con
tains today--sports, original articles, school news, and, of course, a gossip
column. Since that time the newspaper has been an integral part of life here at
SHS--a source of entertainm.ent and information for students, faculty, and parents.
It has been a pleasure to edit Volume XXX of the High Times. Many thanks
and much credit are due this year’s staff, which has been a hardworking and
imaginative one. The help and advice of Mrs. Burnette have been invaluable, as
have the typing talents of Mrs. Creech, Mrs. Tarlton, and Mrs. V/eaver.
I sincerely hope that a thirty-year-old tradition has been preserved and
strengthened by our collective efforts.
