Presented annually to the senior band ^iember selected for the honor by his tellow musicians, the award is made to the person who is judged to have contributed the most to the band and to the community during his four years of high school. The award is co-sponsored by the ^^tiithfield Rotary Club and Instrumentalist ^^iagazine. Rotary President Tom Wright pre sented the award to Tim during the annual Spring band concert Tuesday night. May 9. directed the band in one of the Selections on the program. FINE ARTS FESTIVAL Ann Jones, Smithfield High School Senior, won second place in the first state- ^'^ide Fine Arts Festival of the North ^rolina Federation of Woman's Clubs held Greensboro. The award carries with it ^ price of fifty dollars. She was spon.- ^^red by the Smithfield Junior ¥/Oman's ^lub, Ann's entry was an abstract painting J’^Hed "The IVoodsman". She is a pupil of ^'^^rs. "Get this man out from under me. ^ i$¥J' LA7/ DAY A TARD Joe Morgan, a Sm.ithfield High School senior,won first place in the public speaking contest sponsored Friday night, May 5, in the courthouse in Smithfield by the Johnston County Bar Association in observance of Law Day. Joe will be presented a $250 scholar ship by Mr. V/iley Narron, president of the Johnston County Bar Association, at graduation exercises at Smithfield High School. Joe was coached for the contest by Mrs, Martha Dacus, Smithfield High School English and speech teacher. NATICNAL MUSIC WEEK National Music V/eek, May 7-14, was inaugurated in Smithfield on May 9 under the sponsorship of the Aeolian Music Club by the presentation of high school piano students of Miss Flora Canaday in their annual spring recital. A highlight of the week was the pre sentation of the Aeolian Music Club's Stella Johnson Award, given each year since 1953 in memory of Mrs. Johnson who founded the club in 1928, making this the fortieth anniversary of the Aeolian Club. The award this year was made to Gloria Little. Receiving honorable mention for this award were Jane Holt and Tim Daughtry, both of whom were presented gifts from the Aeolian Club. Special recognition was also given to Gary ¥/ages, a senior from Falcon who has studied this year with Miss Canaday.
