Mrs. Constance Mitchell, presi dent, said these funds will be used to purchase additional equipment for the firemen and to help with completing their meeting room at the Fire House. The ladies express their appre ciation to the firemen who barbe cued their chickens and all others who assisted in any way toward making this sale a success. By Mrs. O. T. Barham Jr. Mike Alsop, 14 year old son of i Mr. and Mrs. James Alsop of i Rolesville, took his soap box derby out for its first trial run this week in preparation for the Derby Race to be held in Raleigh on July 10th. j Mike entered the contest which began in April and is co-sponsored I by the Raleigh Jaycees and the Sir Walter Chevrolet Company. Since April, he has attended 5 or 6 Derby Clinics where they are instructed in the construction of their soap box derbys. Each boy is furnished with wheels and the steering mechanism and they must get the rest of the material needed to complete their cars. Boys can- i not accept help from their fathers ' or anyone although sometimes as sistance is needed to help hold a board for sawing, etc. Mike, who was entered in the Soap Box Derby last summer in Bluefield, West Virginia, said he didn’t come out any kind of a winner, but enjoyed Attends Conference Several officials of the Raleigh Production Credit Association in cluding President Vassar Shearon attended the annual conference of production credit association di rectors and general managers at Grove Park Inn, Asheville, N. C. June 27-29, according to Ernest L. Greene, general manager of the association. The conference was anranged by the officers of the Federal In termediate Credit Bank of Colum bia which provides leadership, su pervision and loan funds for pro duction credit associations in the four states. it so much he was encouraged to enter here. Each boy entered has a Big Bro ther, who is one of the Jaycees and he checks on their progress from time to time during the construc tion of their derbys. Jerry Oliver of Raleigh, is Mike’s Big Brother and has called on him several times already. Their first inspec tion will be held on July 3rd when each boy should have his derby about completed. This week, Mike is busy puttying and sanding and getting it ready for its first coat of paint. Many boys after deciding to en ter this race, find that a place to keep their soap box derby stored while working on it is a real prob lem. In Mike’s instance, his good neighbor friend, Paul Jones, Jr., offered to let him have his garage and thus eliminated that worry. The Alsop family is formerly from Bluefield, West Virginia. They now make their home in Rolesville while Mr. Alsop attends Southeastern Seminary in Wake Forest. Who learns and learns, and acts not what he knows, is one who plows and plows, but never sows.
