- From pre vious page ar*e heterosexual, but understand my situation. "Right now my partner said she’s getting lots of mail, and she loves it. She doesn’t want it to stop. That is [her] only tie to life back here. Mail takes about 8- 10 days from here to there;and about 11- 13 days from there to here, Sue said. Various groups and organizations are raising money for the families of reservists sent to Saudi, because usually the family income is reduced by the loss of income from that person’s civilian job. But no one is raising money for partners "It’s hard to keep your stuff together...and then try to be supportive to your partner who is in the Gulf.” and families of gays and lesbians. Sue has had to adjust to a single income, after being accustomed to living in a two-income household. An independent woman, Sue did not complain about the financial imbalance for gays in the military, but noted the advantages for heterosexuals: "If we were married, I would be the dependent spouse. I’d get medical benefits, use of the commissary, and the Red Cross would assist to get us together if either of us were hospitalized for any reason. The military would probably grant my partner emergency leave if anything happened to me." We asked if there is anything readers of Community Connections can do to help. "If you know anyone in the military, just send them mail. Tell them you’re behind them, but try to [avoid reference to sexual orientation]."▼ Next issue: Why the Gulf war may aid gays’ battle for the right to serve. This increase may reflect a growing awareness in the community of the importance of reporting such incidents. The Documentation Project is going well, and can grow in many different areas, but needs more people to get involved in it. SALGA members who are interested in volunteering should call Martha at 7.54-2485. ▼ GALPAK Update GALPAK (Gay and Lesbian Parents and Their Kids) is geting a very positive response, and more people are showing up at every meeting. We are in the process of assembling a directory of parents and kids involved in our group as a way of making ourselves more easily accessible to each other. In addition, we are beginning to organize weekend social activities for our kids. The next meeting will be Monday, March 18, at 7:00 PM in the library of All Souls Church, Biltmore. For more information, please call Kelly at 299-1129.
