STUDENT TESTING: USES AND ABUSES
More and more players

eye injuries in these sports
have skyrocketed, more
than doubling in five years.
Over 35,000 eye injuries are

Tests are a teaching
responsibility that fre
quently raises vigorous
misunderstanding.
There is no disagreement
that frequent measures of
learning achievement are
needed. Students need to
know how they perform.
It’s obvious that the teacher
needs to know. If there is
to be any significant co-
operation between parent,
teacher and student, the
parents should know, too.
Tests that set a standard
or an achievable goal — “cri
terion-referenced” tests —
are specific in what they
measure about individual
performance.
They show what has —
and hasn’t — been learned,
based on specific objectives.
This information helps the
teacher meet specific stu
dent needs.
We also hear about
standardized and so-called
“achievement” tests, espe
cially when newspapers re
port a sudden drop in
standardized test scores,
or a school’s comparative
standing.

Do you know that rac

the ball, the greater the
risk of injury to unpro

“A giant is always
( ) huge ( ) fierce
( ) mean () scary.”
The “correct” answer
is
“huge.” But if children pick
“scary,” does that mean
they are “wrong,” or that
they can’t read “huge,”
“fierce,” or “mean”? Or
“giant”? And can’t a giant
be all of these things?
• Sometimes contain in

incorrect sources. A student
who knows the correct in

large extent by education

measure knowledge that
may not necessarily be fa

The National Education
Association is NOT against
testing, as some people be
lieve. But the NEA looks
with a stern, critical and
unrelenting eye on standard
ized tests when these and
other problems result from
their use.
Don’t let publicity about
standardized test results dis
tort community views about
education. Remember: as a
citizen responsible for an ef
fectively functioning public
education system you can
work toward alternative
forms of testing that give a
truer measure of student per
formance and a more bal
anced picture of your
school and your students.

It’s not the growing of

If you are among the many
gardeners who annually lose
part of the potato crop to

One of the first con

North Carolina State
