Having increased steadily in Assets for over 16 years without a single loss . and granting liberal loans to shareholders impartially, where progress is guarded by safety. Conservative V - ■ Haying declined over $100,000.00 within six months from citizens desiring to invest, believing same to be.detrimental to “Conservative Progress.” Granting stock loans and withdrawals! on demand, and being sincere with applicants as to dates, real estate loans can be granted. Office, 112 Princess Street V • * 'V . • - “WHAT’S WRONG WITH THE WOMEN?” Daniel Carson Goodman’s much dis cussed photoplay, “What’s Wrong With the Women.”, now placing that age-old problem before the whole. world, brings again to the screen tha't skilled player, Wilton Lackaye. whose per formance is one of the brilliant high lights of the production now holding forth at the Grand theatre. His great talents rounded and ma tured, Wilton ^jackaye Invests-his role with a finish and distinctfon that eould come only from the long years he de voted to the advancement of the Amer ican theatre as one of its most popular and distinguished figures. - " That the screen affords thewetor :i spleiriHd '-oppprtTiiiUy" 'to' give ' expres sion and scope to his talents is the be lief of this distinguished player. “The art of pantomime, as expressed in motion pictures,” Mr. Lackaye as serted, “is a welcome opportunity to actors and actresses of the .present generation., It is especially welcome because It affords' them an opportunity t o place their ^personalities and their talents before an audience much larger than the public that attends _the legit imate theatre. And to the true-artist this means milch indeed'. Those mis guided folk who still maintain that the photoplay is the step-child of the le gitimate theatre make a great mistake, to be sure.” i % «THE CHALLENGE”' 'V",' “The .Challenge,” with Dolores Cas sinelli as the star, plays at the Royal last times today, and tells an absorb ing story different In many respects from the usual' screen romance. In stead of culminating in marriage and leaving the audience to Imagine that the hero and heroine "lived happy ever after" this new picture really, begins after marriage of Barbara (Dolores riassinelli) and the artist Stanley Rob erts (Rod La RocQue). It ts then their adventures begini ■ * This is true tol life, as every married < ouple will agree. What occurs to hus band and wife is invariably more diffl rult and dramatic than the most excit ing period in the life ,of a single man or woman. The modern playwright realizes this “and writes histories ac cordingly. The most successful novels and plays in recent years have depicted the life of married- people. "The First Year” ran for a year anq a half on Broadwe.y and is now touring the country. It tells the story of a newly married couple. "If Winter Comes;’ and "Main Straet,” laat year’s best selling novels, had £S their prin cipal characters marr}ed people whose problems wer& the direct result of mar ried life. The same can be said of the new novel by .Edith -Wharton. ."The Check development of the cold that 'might lied to something tenons. V. f r Glimpses of the Moon," and, of course, ‘“The Beautiful and Damned." Dolores Cassinelli in ‘The Challenge” is fortu nate in having a picture built along these popular lines. WILLIAM DUNCAN TODAY Today the Bijou presents another one of those rare treats that come along ever so often. William Duncan comes today in one of his periodical visits in another roaring, thrilling five-reel fea ture production, “The Fighting Guide," so full of thrills that it’s needless to try to point out ony of them here. And fascinating Edith Johnson is co-star with “Big Bill” in this last thriller from the Vitagraph studios. It is a production that, every movie lover will enjoy from start to finish. It'p a western, of course, but nothing impos sible, a real big story done in a real big way for pictures. AT THE ACADEMY "Up* In Mable’s Room” pleased an other large audience at the Academy last night, being played for the fifth and last time. If every play that Is produced here by the Pickerts is taken by the public as it has taken “Up In Mable’s Room” the manager of the Academy is assured a‘great suc-\ cess. The Pickerts will offer for Thurs-' day Friday and Saturday beginning to day "Smilin’ Through.” One of the greatest comedy scenes that has ever been written in a play is the opening scene between the crusty old man and the sweet tempered doc tor, two life long friends, in the open ing of “Smilin’ Through,” the play that has been selected for production by the Pickert Stock company at the Academy Thursday, Friday and Satur day. ,It is a small part of one of the most interesting theatrical offerings that has ever been presented on an American stage. It was not without consideT-able ef fort that Manager Kermon was able to secure "Smilin’ Through” because of the great demand for the plgy. The rights for production here were se cured thru the Century Play company of New York City. "Smilin’ Through,” in addition tsi being a delightful, whimsical comedy distinctly out of the ordinary, carries with it a big„ significant lesson that will be of interest to every man, wo man or child in Wilmington. And it teaches this lesson without losing* its interest as a play and becoming in %ny sense of the word a preachment. — BLANCHE RING-t-VICTORIA Blanche Ring and Charles Winninger will be seen for an engagement at the Victoria theatre, on next Monday night hnfr promises to be one of the most successful of the, present theatrical season. These two musical comedy stars have attained great popularity in their tours through this section of the country; They were here last season ip "The Whirl of the World.” “As You Were,* the name of the musical play in which they are. appearing this season,, is said to be even better entertain ment than they presented last season. j.
