D -a. I, UNANSWERSD QUESTtON We would think that residents of East Raleigh listened with great interest to the \V.\ AO foruci v, hen there "as recent!./ broadcast a discussion of the bus service of the city. Many point wnv I ■ ;c.’ t on* ■which were higrh nifo; a.atave ----- turn pitvints about the existing verviee as a whole, and more pecificaliy as to certain definite sections of the city. The! eas* for the Carolina Power and Light Company was ably put. by Mr. Witherspoon, its general counsel. I hat. ease seemed to boo dow o to the conten • lion that no broad general improvement in the service can be made white the fare re mains at five cents. The claim was that the volume, es passengers earned by the buses has declined sharply’ in tin past year or so, and that there has been • < on sequent drop in op* rating' revenues while operating costs mounted or at least did not drop Mr. Witherspoon was emphatic in his contention that the company is Using money on its bus operation in Raleigh If the Carolina Power and Light Com pany really needs to increase its fares in order to render adequate service, the nut R r should be looked into. The CAROL!- TOE CAROLINIAN Pnoltfhed by The Carolinian Publishing O lift Tj»Kt Harvett Si.. Rateleh. N. ft the Post Office at RakAgh, N. CL under the At of March 3. 1879, P. R. JKRVAY. Publisher C. D. HALLIBURTON, Editorial* Subscription Hates Due Year, $3.50: Six Months $2.00 Address ail communications and make all checks payable to The Carolinian rather than to individuals. The Carolinian expressly repudiates MIAN is not in position to apeak authori tatively by any means; lad it believes that many of its readers would willingly pay a higher fare if necessary, in return for bet ter service. .But wha Mr. Witherspoon did not ex plain, though we listened eagerly for the question to be brought up and answered, was this: Why is it that the Mar tin-New Bern line, admitted by the company to produce the third highest revenue of any of its lines, is at or neat the bottom in the quality of service rendered? When the re-routing was made to ac commodate downtown changes in traffic. ’the’ operation of the New lieni-Martin loop was changed radically, the final a adjusts.ont resulting in a reduction of the .schedule for a great part of the day to one bus every twenty minutes over the loop, or one UuS every lorty minutes in each d.: lection downtown or Last Raleigh, bound. Before this pro at "intprox emen*" one could get a bus or, the Martin-New Bern loop every ten minutes, moving from down town outward or 1 mm Last Raleigh down town. That .schedule was cut in half for a great, part <<f the day. and reduced con siderably for most of ih>- day. The result is not only much lew frequent buses, but vi'.-wdujg .0; day <■ n tin Ru-i from down town out, bocuu.'.« of the accumulation ol passengers waiting for transport at ion ov« i the twenty ininatperiod. Mi. Witherspoon laments the decline of o\ 1 rail patronage of the buses, caused by the in-Tease in automobile ownership and operation to cost while bus riders. Tit** people ip Last Raleigh art not predomi nantly car owners They ride the buses, infrequently as they run. They ride them enough to make the Martin-New Bern line one of the best paying <d the company's lines, even with the company s smallest buses, and those running (< xcepi at the hours when then patrons. v». h<. worn in do mestic set-vice in die northern and western sections oi the ett are to lie t can •’•ported t at among the mo-,: infrequent intervals to be bound on any route When U»:o La- 1 Raleigh- patrons don't i ide !>». •;•>>, tin y It may be that the company needs high er fares. But no one has explained why, with evvrvone pay ing the five cent fare, Last Raleigh Ims been getting by compar ison such inferior service. SHORT AND UGLY WORDS Senator Eastland of Mississippi has gone a long way toward proving himself a worthy successor to his late fellow semi - tor and Mir.sissippian, the lamented Theo dore Bibo, as to \ ileness of longue. The use of guttersnipe language in public and io carrying out the business of the Senate, ceh brated for its dignity and urbanity, - imply decreases the stator of the man and of ids state, neither .o' which am ai ord such a diminution of slot us. If Senator Eastland hat! been decorated by the witness with such a title as lie con ferred on the witness, fie probably would have invoked the full powers of the Sen ate to get f oi the offender the heaviest contemyt penalty pe ’mitten by law. Be ides hi.- execrable taste Senator Eastland Aiowed ,i streak of cowardice by taking advantage of his position to insult an ad versary who could not strike back in kind had he be* n disposed so do so. Add to all this that there was no corn iit nsurate, provocation furnished by Mr. Baldwin for such sultry and insulting -language. The Progressive Party secretary merely said he. would take an oath to up ■hold the Constitution, but tliat the Senator' himself couldn’t swear to uphold the 14th and 15th Amendments, integral parts of the Constitution. It is a well-known old saying that pa truth often hurts. In this case the truth about Mr. Eastland caused that worthy to go off the deep end. There were other fn< !'<>rs, however, to account for the sen ator’s amazing performance, as has been suggested above. One is long-time habit of thought and speech. The other looks to m very much like the overbearing manners of niK c \Ttorj\n vs Pi'T V- .if ' ■ : - '■s if A ry- kouRT m/fX - 5 4 I —#- A -\ v A.— ’.ft / JHITLtR'B % Hf-yU-Wf /MERlcfert A ; / po«£ \ % % "- // *Wt\ \ ' % / TH£ORY 1 t / \ 1 / ' race 1 -%M CROW \ i H ' ,!KEO .....
