Kven lac the athlete has to be required through long and faithful practice. There is no roya! toad to I fame or success. Nor is there any royal road to heaven. If drudgery is the main | ingredient of temporal success, it is even more fundamental to the attainment of spiritual perfection. Whoever wishes to enjoy the ulti i mate reward reserved for God's j I faithful must expect to win it the ! hard way. He may find that there I : is no drudgery so hard as the fight ! . to overcome the No s enemy—his ! I own weakness;**. ! j The fact that a man has to work j nut his salvation in humility, hard- j j ship or discomfort should not. ! however, dampen his spiritual j ! ardor. It should rather make turn j more ready to seek God's help in ; the struggle. He should bear in j mind that although God may not i spare His followers from trials and j griefs irs their quest for final happi* 1 ness, He never imposes « burden that is too heavy. More encouraging still is the fact that God xs always with His willing friends, infusing into th* ir souls a joy and contentment that sustains them in their progress toward the j great final gosl. Prayer, self-Mcrifice, self-con* j quest, steadfast devotion to the laws of God, charity and patient goodwill toward others—these are the elements that constitute man's 1 .irudgery.
