The results of this year's poll
show a predominance of career
women as against housewives and
celebrities who topped past lists.
Actress Lena Horne the only ce
lebrity on the list, came out in
No. 1 position, not so much for her
gorgeous formal gowns as for her
I flawless taste in her daytime and
! at-home wardrobe.
A newcomer on the 195(1 list,
Mrs. Betty Clark of Los Angr
leg. is ore of the West Coast’s
most sparkling personalities, lo j
referring (o her well-rounded
closets, fashion experts said:
•'She has no competition out
I here." Vlrs. Clark, wife of suc
cessful hold owner Horace
Clark, admits a preference to j
high fashion cocktail ami bad
gowns.
j | New York's first Negro Assem
! blywoman. Mrs. Bessie Buchanan,
j rated No. 3 spot for her “appropri
! atensss at all times.” Busy Mrs.
j Buchanan may begin her day in
; Albany and end it some 12 hours
later at a dinner dance in her hus
| band’s Savoy Ballroom. Through it

all she remains well groomed.
The only unmarried career wo- j
man on this year's list is Beth I,apt- j
bright, youthful civic and social j
worker, of Cleveland. Miss Lam
bright, daughter of Dr. W. H. Lam
bright, was chosen for her impeca
blo attire that leans toward simple
lines without being plain A music
teacher in the city schools, Miss
Lam bright's name appeared on ail
ballots coining from the midwest.
Socialite Vera Reddick is Bos
ton's addition to the current crop
of the country’s Best Dressed. The
good looking National President of
the Girl Friends prefers ‘'dress
maker suits and smart hats ', but
her expensive wardrobe contains
an abundance of cocktail and for
mal clothes.
Mrs. Vertla Welcome, wife of
i prominent Baltimore physi< ian
Hr. Henry Welcome, is the on
ly full-time housewife among
this year’s winners. Mrs Wel
come's daily calendar of civic
and welfare activities calls fm
funrtional clothes. Perhaps the
most conservative of all. Mrs.
Welcome is known along the
i Seaboard for always wearing
‘‘the right tiling at the right
time ”
Three-time repeater Billie Geter I
Thomas is still holding her own as
one of the Nations’ Best. Dressed. |
Head of the French Department at i
Spelman College, modest Mrs. Tho- !
mas admits to being a little "awed ' I
about this whole business, of being ;
"Best Dressed".
Another active business woman
and newcomer on the 1956 list is
Mrs. Olivia Stanford, owner of
| Olivia s House of Beauty in New
£ York City In addition to spending
! full-time at her beauty business.
Mrs. Stanford is a housewife and
j a mother. She dresses sitnplj* but
j beautifully bordering somewhat on
the dramatic in “after-five” fash
j ions.
From the far Southeast comes
gay divorcee Sue Kelker Rus
sell, one of the beautiful Kelk
er sisters of Pensacola, Florida.

University. A career girl from
the word “Go”, Mrs, Russell
owns dozens of suits, which
she prefers to most other types
of garments. She dresses them
up and down as the occasion
demands. Faculty as well as
students rate her a* tops sash- I
ion wise.
Detroit is justly proud of Mrs.
Beulnb Whitby who somehow man
ages to stay appropriately groomed
despite the demands of her taxing
job of Acting Director of the City
Commission on Community Rela
tions. Aetvie for a number of years
in national club and organization
work, Mrs. Whitby was chosen be
cause she, as well as all the oth
ers. exemplifies basic standards of
correct dress at all times.
Because the balloting was so
j ’lose, for the first time this year,
I NAFAD is listing "runners-up”.
