For The Mother-To-Be
The usual discomforts that oc
cur during pregnancy—backaches,
leg cramps, abdominal pains, are
the result of physical alterations
and changes which occur during
that period. The most marked of
these- takes place ir. the abdominal
and pelvic area* where the child
is developing and in the lower
back, which must alter its posi
tion to accommodate the increased
weight, by correspondingly in
creasing the depth of the curve
of die lower back.
This curve increase often cre
ates the appearance of "sway-
Lack." It develops rapidly during
the period of pregnancy. Follow
ing this increased growth in the
abdominal awa, organs become
crowded. The mother’s body
changes to keep pace with the
weigh*, increase. If the mother’s
back is not. flexible enough for
this change to come about, back- j
aches will occur, and all of the
conditions mentioned above may
develop. Crowded organs encour
age constipation find circulatory
failuie symptoms. These ere all j
effected by physical changes, and
the lack c-f accommodation by the
mother. Therefore. v,e must direct i
considerable attention to the phys- I
Lai state of the expectant mother. *
The important care here must !
come from the chiropractor who
specialises in the treatment of the |
spine, for this is the location of
the difficulties that derive from !
the rapid physical change. Consul
tation with the doctor of chiro- !
practic will bring prompt relief j
and correction of these conditions.
Such attention, plus moderate ex- |
, erases axd proper diet and hy- j
gicne, will be of great value to j
the expectant mother.

Another Kind Os Ulcer
Peptic ulcers in the stomach are so common that few persons realize
they also occur in the esophagus, the tube that carries food from the
mouth to the stomach. In fact, a recent medical study indicates that
esophagitis as this condition is known, medically may be much
commoner than previously be
lieved, even by doctors.
Reporting- m the “American
Journal of Surgery," Drs. E, B.
Benedict, and G. 1. Nardi, of the
Harvard Medical School, state
that improved methods of diag
nosis have led the medical pro
fession to discover more eases of
esophagitis than evc-r before.
The condition appears to be
more prevalent among men than
women. It also occurs most fre
quently between the ages of forty
and seventy, although the Har
vard researchers report one. fif
teen year-old patient and another
of ninety years.
The condition is one that grows
progressively worse unless de
lected early and properly treated.
At first, it produces heartburn,
occasional vomiting, and soreness
in the throat. Eventually, the eso
phagus becomes so narrow the
patient can hardly eat or drink,
and then only with great pain.
Diet, the Harvard doctors write,
is very lmpo-tant in the treatment
of an ulcerated osoghagus. Un
wise eating or drinking may be
very injurious to the inflamed
membrane. Alcohol, fried or high
ly seasoned foods should be entire
ly omitted from the diet, the doc
tors recommend.
As for medical treatment, the
doctors point out that antacids
arc particularly useful because
they neutralize gastric acidity,
which is the cause c-f the ulcer.

One of the secrets of why to
