Ted Shields, a white restau rant worker was arrested by po lice in connection with the shot gun slaying of Mrs, Bernice Col lins, a dishwasher in Mike’s Case her: whore Shields worked. The man reportedly shot Mrs. Collins in the face, chest and arms after allegedly ordering her out of the building because she had been drinking. .Shields r ,-ortedly told Bo nce Chief G. J. Kuppenthal that Mrs. Collier charged him with a knife after lie had twice ordered her out of the building. He said after insist ing that she leave, lie went to a back room and got a shot gun, When he returned, he stated, she charged him with the knife. He told investigating de tectives in the case that when she advanced on him he open ed fire with a single blast hit ting Mrs. Collier in the fare, chest and arms. He said he was re-loading to shoot again when the woman fell dead at his feet. Dr. M. B. Kirkpatrick, Mont gomery County coroner said the woman was shot with a .410 gauge shotgun at about: a 15 feet dis tance. The- mtaurant owner. Bill Bai ley, said he had hired Mrs. Col lins as a dic-hwaher only a week before the shooting. A crowd of about 500 Negroes and whites gathered outside the case- after the incident occurred. The ether day, Bill suddenly announced that he just had to have a workshop. “And while I’m at. it,” he decided, '‘.l’ll fix up the basement—-tile the floor and put up some wood paneling—make it into a real game room.
