Negroes own their homes, and that the population as a whole has a yearly purchasing power of 17,5 billion dollars, Secretary of Labor James P. Mitchell lauds achievements of the race in a December Render’s Digest article, "The Negro Moves Up." Secretary Mitchell says the qui et revolution which has changed Negro economic status since World i War II is "the most amazing social and economic story of this decade." The number of Negro prop rietors and manager has in creased 131 percent in the past 16 years, he reports. They own more than 200 insurance com panies with five million poll- j cyholdera, including members of all races. They also own and operate 44 hanks and savings and loan institutions, with combined assets of more than 100 million dollars. He tells the story of Asa T Spaulding, vice-president of the North Carolina Mutual Life Insur ance Co. of Durham, N. C., and a U. S. representative at last year’s UNESCO conference in New Delhi. India; of S. B. Fuller, who 21 years ago started a business with $25 and now heads a firm employ ing 5000 salesmen, one fifth of them white; John Johnson, on re lief 20 years ago and now publish er of Ebony. And, he says, there are hundreds of success stories less spectacular, but just as encouraging.
