Washington Club held Its regular meeting last Sun day evening at the Manly Street Christian Church in the dining voom. A delicious turkey dinner was served by the hostess, Mrs. Luella D. Cheatham. Guests pres ent were Rev. T. C. Hamens, Mr. T„ Walker of Wake Forest, Mr. Granville Greene. Mrs Lillie Finch and little Miss Judith Williams. ATTEND MID-SEASON BEAUTY SHOW On Monday, February 24. the students of the Civella Beauty Col lege attended the Beauticians' Mid- Season Beauty Show, which was held at the Bloodwnrth Street YM CA. The students met Dr. Donald Stokes of Newark. N. J. and Mr. Banks from New York, Dr Stokes demonstrated how to use a liquid dry shampoo. LINCOLN BATIK CLUB The Fourth anniversary of the Lincoln Park Club was observed Sunday. The club was organized on February 28, 1954 at the home of Mrs, Nancy McCullers. The club's purpose is to help the sick, needy and know the neigh bors better who live in the com munity. The 4th anniversary was observ ed by worshipping with the mem bers and friends of Tupper Mem orial Baptist Church. Members of the club are! Mes dames M. The hostess surprised the ladies by making photographs of the group, WAKE CREDIT UNION TO HAVE NEW HEADI.’AIMERS The Wake Credit Union will soon establish new headquarters here. Plans are now underway to open a credit union office at Davidson's Jewelers- at 122 E, Hargett St. The Officers and directors of the Wake Credit Union feel that a centrally located office will help to stimu late the new promotion and ex pansion program now being put in to shape it is their hope that by the end of this year an additional 5000 members will have been added to the membership rolls of the union. “Y” TEEN CANTEEN MEETING The weekly meeting of the “Y” Teen club of Sojourner ruth Y V CA will be held Friday evening February 28th at the Y This group under the leadership of Mrs. Purdue Anders affords wholesome recration for the teen’ age boys and girls of the community. March 4. Mrs, Harniet Jones is Chairman of this group. Goal Os Tire NEW YORK - A $2,250,000 goal has been set for the 1958 ! United Negro College Fund Cam- i paign it was announced here to- 1 day by Stanley C Hope, national campaign chairman. Mr. Hope is j president of Esso Standard Oil Company. * * * * “Mounting costs of educa tion and the recent addition of two colleges to Fund member ship have made it necessary to increase the goal by a quar ter-of-a-million dollars this year,” Mr. Hope said. “The two newly admitted colleges, Bar bara-Scotia, Concord, N. C and St Paul’s, Lawrenceville, Va,. bring the current mem bership to 33.’’ The 1953 campaign scheduled between April 1 and 15, marks the College Funds 15t.h annual na tion-wide appeal. Formally-or ganized campaigns will be con ducted in 120 cities and town throughout the communities in which the member colleges are locatd. Where no formal cam paigns are organized, appeals are made by letter, TV and radio, news papers and magazines. The support raised provides ap proximately 10 per cent of the operating costs of the NUCF col leges. It is used by the schools principally to provide scholai ships. Contributions are also used to purchase laboratory equipment and library, books, to underwrite student health programs and to bring faculty salaries more nearly in line with those of comparable institutions. * # # + All UNCF member schools are privately supported, four year accredited colleges and universities. The oldest school, Lincoln University was estab lished in 2854. i* * * < Since it was organized in 1944 by the colleges themselves, the United Negro College Fund has raised more than $35,000,000.
